New tabs/windows start in Firefox

more options

Recently I've started having a problem with new windows suddenly starting in FIrefox. They start at random, from any website I might be on. They are of random websites. I have tried every kind of malware and antivirus program available and the problem will not go away. I'm at the point of forcing myself to just use Internet Explorer, which I hate. Please help!

Sometimes pages are opened by external applications. If you change your default browser to Edge or Internet Explorer, do you still get the random windows in Firefox?

In case it's an add-on, could you test in Firefox's Safe Mode? In Safe Mode, Firefox temporarily deactivates extensions, hardware acceleration, and some other advanced features to help you assess whether these are causing the problem.

If Firefox is not running: Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox.

If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

and OK the restart.

Both scenarios: A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh).

Any improvement? (More info: Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode)
