Is youtube buffering a Firefox problem, an internet problem or a youtube problem?

Youtube videos are constantly buffering. This is a fairly recent problem (my guess is the last 1-2 months). Buffering used to happen occasionally but happens for 5 or more minutes and several times during one 1-hour show. We are working off of WIFI that we've had for more than a year from a modem from Best Buy, using Comcast.

I'll have many things opened (not unusual). I'll listen to a youtube program using Firefox while opening AOL mail. A link in email opens a web site. I copy some paragraph and open Word to paste. This is nothing new but now I'm running into the buffering problem. In fact, I can now have only Firefox open, only have a youtube program playing and have a buffering problem.

A Google article said youtube shows were not coming to directly from youtube and went into some directions (over my head) about removing some in-between-sites that youtube was being run thru. The article said if you could remove the go-betweens, you'd have a better youtube experience.

I would be happy with any suggestions (that aren't over my head. I would use the old line, "Talk to me as if I were a 4-year old." But 4-year olds could probably understand any suggestion given! So talk to me as if I were 72 years old!!!)

To begin with, I don't do 4 yo suggestions. I am 67 yo, with no children or grand-children; I learned about electronics & radio frequency hardware in the USN in the early 1970's. There are a number things that could be causing that type of problem. This forum might not be the best place to seek help with a "hardware problem" with a wireless connection. http://www.dslreports.com/ might be a better place to get help with a WiFi problem; but I'll try to provide a simple test for you to perform.

As a test, can you plug that device directly into the router or modem and not use WiFi? Then see if that buffering issue is solved or at least lessened.

Most common problem I have seen: 2.4 GHz & 5 GHz cordless phones use the same 2.4 GHz / 5 GHZ (802.11b/g/n) frequency range as routers use, along with a plenitude of other consumer products that are found in a typical home. Select a different channel for that type of device.

My guess is electrical interference in your area or even your building that is now affecting your WiFi signal vs a few months ago.

Any new "cordless" products in your home?

Devices such as a new cordless telephone for your "land line" POTS (Plain-Old-Telephone-System) service? Check the manual to see if it is using 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz. Many use the unlicensed 2.4 GHz and 5GHz band of frequencies and might "walk all over" other devices that are on the same channel or an adjacent channel when those other devices are actually being used.

Baby monitors, wireless doorbells, or wireless video cameras would also use the same two groups of frequencies. Also, a neighbor that recently started using WiFi or changed their setup could be affecting your WiFi connection speed when they are streaming videos at the same time as you are.

Or maybe a new microwave oven? Known to cause issues with WiFi, especially if they "leak radiation". That isn't safe for people, so it is something that needs to be fixed. Think all the problems . recalls that Samsung has had recently with consumer products.

Also, some "wireless" systems for sending TV signals to other rooms in the house could cause that type of interference.

Also, a new two-way radio in your neighborhood might cause interference that is intermittent. CB (Citizens Band) or HAM radios can affect WiFI reception.

Changing the channel that a device uses, or even the router uses, might eliminate the interference that is causing a slow WiFi connection.

There were several suggestions made so I need to play around with them to see if one solution works. The suggestion to plug the computer up to a line without WIFI is a good idea and I can do that. Thanks for the suggestions
