Hi,

All of a sudden something strange happened.. When I normally go to my bookmarks it would light the blue star up, but now when I go to them it stays clear and when I click on it, it prompts me to make a new bookmark.. How can I make sure that the star lights up again when I click on my bookmarks?

Thanks in advance

Hello,

Are you able to find your bookmark all in the bookmark menus? By default they should go into your Unsorted Bookmarks folder, where you can update the location of the bookmark in the Library:

  • Bookmarks Bookmarks-29 > Show All Bookmarks

If they are not there, you can check for problems with the places.sqlite database file in the Firefox profile folder.

Either enter about:support in your address bar, or go to:

  • Help (or New Fx Menu > Help-29) > Troubleshooting Information

Beside Profile Folder, click the "Show Folder" button to access the location of the file. Make sure it isn't set to read only (right click and select Properties).

In Firefox you can also install the Places Maintenance extension to run maintenance on the file. Please read the following articles first as they provide helpful hints and instructions that may be relevant to you:

Hello,

Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if maybe an extension is causing the problem. Firefox Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that temporarily turns off hardware acceleration, resets some settings, and disables add-ons (extensions and themes).

If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu:

  • Click the menu button New Fx Menu, click Help Help-29 and select Restart with Add-ons Disabled. Be sure not to Reset Firefox as this will delete your extensions and some settings

If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:

  • On Windows: Hold the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.

When the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, select "Start in Safe Mode".
Safe Mode Fx 15 - Win

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, theme, or hardware acceleration. Please follow the steps in the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article to find the cause.

To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.

When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help others with the same problem.

Just to be sure that you understand how it works:

  • Clicking the star on the Navigation toolbar will bookmark the page in the "Unsorted Bookmarks" folder and the star turns blue to show that
  • Bookmarks > "Bookmark This Page" (Ctrl+D) will bookmark the page in the Bookmarks Menu folder (you need to confirm that)
  • "Bookmark This Page" can be accessed via the right-click context menu in the browsing area or via the Bookmarks menu in the Firefox menu button drop down or menu bar (Alt+B)
  • If the URL in the Navigation toolbar is bookmarked and the star is highlighted blue then click this highlighted star or use the "Bookmark This Page/Edit This Bookmark" menu item (Ctrl+D) to edit the properties of the bookmark like name and location and move the bookmark to another folder or remove the bookmark

I know how bookmarking works and I don't use any extensions. The problem is that when I bookmark a URL that when I click on the bookmark that the star isn't highlighted as if I haven't made the bookmark...

more options

If that URL is really bookmarked then you should see a blue highlighted star and the heading of the pop-up is "Edit This Bookmark" instead of "Bookmark This Page". That that if there are redirects that this might not be working properly.

Did you check the unsorted folder in the Bookmarks Manager (Library)?

The problem is that the blue star does not appear... and there are no redirects and yes I have checked the unsorted folder...

I have tried the methods, but they don't help

If going into safe mode didn't help, and you don't have any extensions, what happens if you reset Firefox? You will be able to reach that option by using the same steps for getting into safe mode.

Alternatively you can go to:

  1. Open the Troubleshooting Information page using one of these methods:
    • Click the menu button New Fx Menu, click help Help-29 and select Troubleshooting Information. A new tab containing your troubleshooting information should open.
    • If you're unable to access the Help menu, type about:support in your address bar to bring up the Troubleshooting Information page.
  2. At the top right corner of the page, you should see a button that says "Reset Firefox" that looks like this: Button reset. Click on it.
  3. Firefox will close and reset. After it is done, Firefox will show a window with the information that is imported.
  4. Click Finish and Firefox will reopen.
