Use the Aurora build of Firefox if your device does not ship with the Play Store or you don't want to have a Google account.

Open the 'Play Store' app on your phone and search for Firefox.

I enabled the Play Store app but it dies, screen winks off, comes back but no running of any app.

Where is Mozilla's down load?

I enabled a few more google apps and now the Play Store app takes me to a google login screen looking for a google account ....

This is a security issue, I prefer to down load from the Mozilla site and not some 3rd party web site.
Does Mozilla offer a down load or not?
This is a security issue

While this is true for the Firefox desktop version, the Google Play store is the official distribution channel for the Android version.

So no is the answer?

You can get it from the FTP server. https://wiki.mozilla.org/Mobile/Platforms/Android#Download_Firefox_for_Android
