Mozilla Firefox pop-up windows continually come back after I click on the X to close them.

Three pop-up windows keep coming up on the right side of my screen, having to do with activating protection, turning on firewall, removing viruses. Clicking on the X closes them for about ten seconds, then they come back. I've tried clicking on "ignore," but they still come back. I don't know if these are legitimate notices or not.

Hi, closing those pop-ups with the X usually only dismisses that one message, so they will keep coming back if a site still has permission to send you notifications.

First, please do not click anything inside the pop-ups, and do not call any number or download anything they suggest. Messages about activating protection, turning on a firewall or removing viruses that appear on the right side of the screen in this way are very often fake warnings, not legitimate notices from Firefox or Windows.

In Firefox, go to Settings, then Privacy & Security, then scroll to Permissions and open the Settings button beside Notifications. If you see a site you do not recognise, or one you did not mean to allow, remove it and make sure new requests are blocked. That normally stops the repeat messages straight away.

It would also help to know whether the messages appear only while Firefox is open, and whether they mention a particular site name. If they appear even when Firefox is closed, please say so, as that points to a different kind of notification.

The windows appear on any and all pages, not just when Firefox is running. They all say Mozilla Firefox on the top, two reference McAfee viruses being found and license expiring; the third just says ATTENTION secure your data.

The small popups on right side of Firefox window are Web Push Notifications from sites you have allowed to send you notifications. Instead of useful information some may send you junk, spam, fake virus/trojan/antivirus alerts etc. You can revoke or block the sites from sending you notifications. The sites should be in the popups.
