when I used thunderbird on my xp machine, the "reply", "delete", "forward" etc tabs/buttons were in color, on my windows 8 machine they are not and I would like them in color. How do I do this??

Sounds like you had some kind of theme installed. This is not a standard Thunderbird feature.
