Problems with ESR not being fully uninstalled/

goose

There have been some strange problems since I totally uninstalled a Firefox ESR version, and went back to the normal versions. That ESR version is still showing up in the registry in odd places as if it has not been uninstalled: Firefox-308045B0AF4A39CB

I'm wondering if it is causing problems, because when I made it the default browser, it seemed microsoft started using it in some of the ways it ordinarily uses Edge, which is why I do not use Edge.

I do NOT want a browser to access or control my desktop or anything else on my computer. I simply want to use it as a browser.

At least there is no longer "your browser is being managed by your organization" showing up (because I designated no update. I prefer to choose to update manually. Because I do not always have time to reconfigure the screwups updates cause because of changes made. Firefox is not as bad as microsoft . . . yet, but unsuspecting updates always create time some type of configuration issues that require time.

Recently, I fully uninstalled the ESR version, and returned to a fully installed regular version. It was 155, but suddenly with a few days it was 158, then an auto update to 159. I made sure to download the Firefox full version, NOT the microsoft store version. However there was already one automatic update without notification, and I had selected no update without my confirmation. So I am wondering if the update/download was the microsoft store version that screwed up my compute configuration, again, because microsoft settings is no longer working. And even though everything was uninstalled from the ESR version, including in the registry (I did a search and removed what was left) and after a day or two there were no more of the ESR version entries. So it seems to have been fully uninstalled.

Since then there was an auto update to 159 which I did not know until the configuration changed, so I checked the version. Since that time I see that entries for Firefox- (the ESR version are back in my registry) even though I was able to fully uninstall everything. But it only lasted until the update.

Is it no longer possible to be informed there is an update, and choose whether or not to update at the time. I do not trust the update will not be the microsoft version, so that means I must do an update via a full install that I download myself and know it is not the Microsoft version.

I am not exactly sure what microsoft does differently with it's update. But it seems to connect the browser to a desktop shell. I am wondering if the problems from microsoft start when I select Firefox as the default browsers - which cause the microsoft update version to make Firefox a startup shell, the way it uses Edge to be a startup shell

So basically, I'm wondering if a microsoft update of Firefox has screwed up my microsoft settings again, because Microsoft Settings is no longer working. And two days ago I got this error message when trying to access Microsoft Settings: all ms-settings are showing up class no registered ms-settings:defaultapps?registeredAppMachine=Firefox-308045B0AF4A39CB class not registered

I asked in the past how to prevent getting the microsoft version of the Firefox update and there was no response. So I changed to ESR. (Then the bank need an updated version of the browser to connect properly without problems, so I changed back to the regular version.) Surely other folks have had a similar problems and want the Microsoft interferring with Firefox updates..

What kinds of odd places?

I'm wondering if it is causing problems, because when I made it the default browser, it seemed microsoft started using it in some of the ways it ordinarily uses Edge, which is why I do not use Edge.

If the program was removed, I don't see how Windows could be using it for anything. Or do you get errors that the path is invalid, a file is missing, etc.?

If you check in Settings > About Firefox > Firefox updates

I assume you have "Check for updates, but choose when to install" selected. That should cover regular release Firefox.

So I am wondering if the update/download was the microsoft store version that screwed up my compute configuration, again, because microsoft settings is no longer working.

On Help > More Troubleshooting Information, is there anything in Distribution ID? According to the support article "Use the Troubleshooting Information page to help fix Firefox issues," if that field is blank, it's not the Microsoft version.

And even though everything was uninstalled from the ESR version, including in the registry (I did a search and removed what was left) and after a day or two there were no more of the ESR version entries. If it is the MSIX version, Microsoft handles the updates.

Could you check your Windows Task Scheduler for Mozilla update tasks? This would be where you could remove any updater for the ESR version that you no longer want to run, as well as check for any other oddities:

  • Click in the Windows search box, type task and when Task Scheduler appears on the right, click Open
  • In the left column of the Task Scheduler, expand "Task Scheduler Library" and click Mozilla
  • Look for a Firefox Background Update task, single click to select it, then click Disable in the right column
  • Repeat as needed

Then hopefully, you will no longer have sh*t happens events with your Firefox updates.
