using about:config to get rid of bookmark toolbar icons
How can I use about:config to get rid of icons in my bookmark toolbar?

The icons next to the names of your bookmarks are called favicons. I don't think it's possible to remove them without the use of custom CSS code.

Hopefully someone knows how to use about:config to get rid of them.

No, wxie is right. Try to go to https://www.reddit.com/r/FirefoxCSS/ and search for tips.
I have been using userChrome.css to get rid of the icons for years using. That approach still works on the latest release, 147.
However, the firefox team has abandoned userChrome.css. See the following, where it says that css functionality may disappear without notice at anytime.

So ... hopefully someone knows how to use about:config to get rid of them.
To clarify, it has not been "abandoned", more that it is really challenging to support an unknown number of unknown modifications while still develop and ship new features (and maintain existing features). As such, userChrome.css customisation is not officially supported.
Changing Firefox preferences from the about:config page can sometimes break Firefox or cause strange behavior. You should only do this if you know what you're doing. Please read Firefox advanced customization and configuration options to learn more.
