This is maddening. A couple of days ago TB started to freeze. I have not added any new add-ons. I don't even have any add-ons. I tried one suggestion of repairing and compacting folders and that did not help. I also tried the accessibility.force_disabled change from 0 to 1. It is still happening. I have to use Task Manager to shut it down because if I right-click and close it tells me that TB is already running but not responding when I try to restart it. It takes 4-5 tries to get it to the point where I can have a few minutes to do anything in the program. If I leave and come back, the mail window is frozen. Help, please! I have been using TB for years and never had this problem!

If you disable the sound in Thunderbird Settings, does the problem go away?

Unfortunately, no. I changed the setting for "Play a Sound", but it still is making the new mail sound even though the setting if off, and it is still freezing. I just turned off all of the new message notifications. We'll see if that makes a difference.

Not sure if similar to mine....

I have to use task manager to close it down if it should freeze when opened. All the detail is in the link, as well as running Windows 25h2, might not be relevant.

New install of Windows and fresh install of build 144.0.1 of TB. Only a British dictionary installed as an extension.

My freezing (hang) is not as regular as yours it seems.

Since I disabled all notifications, it seems to be working better. No freezing of the windows in the last couple of days. It does freeze up my native keyboard at times, though, and I need to restart. Since I mostly use a separate keyboard I guess I'll just live with it.

I had this issue.. it's not to do with the notification sound but to do with the Notification ballons in Windows 11 becoming unstable after the latest Windows updates.. they worked for me on a restart for a bit then something was breaking them (I suspect something to do with my external monitor detatching and attaching).. The crash would happen if I had a new e-mail that Thunderbird was trying to generate a notification in the Windows 11 notification centre for.

Try turning off (ideally before entering any mailbox password) "Use the system notification" under "Incoming Mails" in Thunderbird's preferences.. exit it and then start it again.

See if this fixes that:

- go to TB menu > Settings > General

- scroll all the way down and click the 'Config editor' button on the right
- click 'Accept the risk and continue' if that appears
- search for accessibility.force_disabled > change the value to 1 > click the check mark
- restart TB
