I receive a popup message purporting to come from Google whenever I open Thunderbird. I can close it, but it keeps coming back. It asks me to sign in to my Google Account. While it is up, I cannot use my email.

They image is too large to upload.

I believe this article describes what is happening. https://hackerone.com/reports/643274

I have not been able to find a fix for this online. Please help.

Unless you complete the pop authentication you will never be able to use your gmail in Thunderbird.

I can use gmail in Thunderbird. I am confident that the notice I am receiving is phishing. I can close it out, but it returns every few minutes and while it is up I cannot use any email. Did you look at article?

You will have to post an image as what you are describing does not sound like the youtube account and twitter account.

To capture and post image: When you get pop up..press the 'prt scr' key to get a screendump. Open a simple program like 'Paint' and use Ctrl+V to paste in screendump. Save as jpg to somewhere like desktop. In this forum question use the 'Add images' 'Browse' button, locate jpg image and clickon open. then upload image and it will display as thumbnail.

Are you aware that gmail is currently informing people of their intent to change how people logon to view their emails? Do you know gmail is stopping all access using normal passwords in what gmail call 'less secure apps' ? The 'Less secure apps' option is being removed. This may or may not effect you.

If you use IMAP then you might already be set up to use 'Authentication Method: OAuth2 and you've been using it for a while. In which case, all is ok, you do not need to do anything.

Gmail are offering two options. Either use 'Authentication Method: Normal Password' In which case: logon to gmail webmail account and set up 2 step verification and get an app generated password, then in Thunderbird edit the stored password to use that app generated password instead of normal password.

OR use the method prefered by gmail and offered by Thunderbird. Regardless of whether you use gmail Pop or Imap mail account, use 'Authentication Method: OAuth2' for both incoming and Outgoing smtp server settings. You will need cookies to be allowed.

Please note: Thunderbird is auto updating as per the link offered by Matt.

So do check the setting you are using.

Are you using POP or IMAP? Are you using Normal Password or OAuth2 ? Have you already set up 2 step verification to use app specific generated password ?
