After the most recent update, 78.4.0, I cannot receive emails. I can send emails. Also the folder icons changed from yellow to white. Erols.com (RCN) is my email host. I can still receive emails on my phone and through mail2web.com. I have tried turning off firewalls, both Webroot and the native one in Windows 10. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling both latest version and an earlier version. I checked to make sure the proper password was still saved. When I hit the Get Messages button, there is a "Connected to pop.rcn.com..." in the bottom pane where the "unread" and "total" are listed. It just vanishes after a bit. Anybody got a cure?

re : Also the folder icons changed from yellow to white.

The old folders were images eg: .png and the new folders are vector graphics eg:.svg SVG stands for Scalable Vector Graphics. There was an issue for some people when using the images because they are not scalable, so some people had blurry images.

The developers have been using SVG for various other graphics in Thunderbird and finally decided to include the folders in the folder pane.

However, the developers also included some options such as the ability to individually colour those new folders.

At the link below, I have listed three methods. First is basically included in Thunderbird. Second is creating an automatic method of applying colours. Third is how to get the old icons back. The user chose one of those methods to suit them, but you could choose whatever you prefer. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1309818

In addition there is an addon which you may find useful: https://addons.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/addon/phoenity-icons/

Version 78 changed the minimum TLS version to TLSv1.2 If your server is still using the old protocols TLSv1.0 or TLSv1.1 then you will not be able to get a proper link to server. So you need to follow the info at the following link to reset the minimum back to TLSv1.0.

After you have done the change, please restart Thunderbird.

This morning Thunderbird gave me a message it was updated to 78.4.0 (32-bits) on Windows 10.

From that moment on: none of my 6 email accounts (which are hosted by 4 different providers) are getting mail anymore! Also sending is not possible.

I tried to adjust the security.tls.version.min setting from 3 to 1. That restulted in the possiblity to send mail. But still no mail getting in. Also tried:

- restart TB in safe mode
- ESET firewall 100% off

And to be clear. Everything worked fine till the last time I did shut down yesterday. So, before the TB update.

Please help.

Thanks! Sander

I cannot receive emails after the automatic update to Thunderbird 78.4.0. I can send, though.

I have gmail emails and several other emails from two other domains loaded on my PC. I have sub-folders in my inboxes and rules to direct mails to their sub-folders. We are preparing for a huge audit and my emails are sorted into these different folders. I cannot afford to loose my emails (they are removed from the mail server after 14 days). I also need to retain my sent items. We use as security SSL/TLS.

1). The SSL/TLS certificate with ISP was checked. All of these are up to date and are not using old deprecated versions. I have tried to use deprecated = true and also tried making security.tls value to 2, to 1, to 0. Nothing works. Our ISP tried to help as well. 2). Only when I change connection security (under security settings in account settings) to NONE, can I receive emails. (But this does not work on the Gmail accounts: some are setup as POP3 and others as IMAP.) 3). The antivirus program merely scans emails and does not block any incoming emails at all. I called them to find out if they could help me. 4). Other users that upgraded to the same v78.4.0 have no issues. Only me. 5). I installed Thunderbird on another PC and copied my profile over to that Thunderbird - still the same problem. Currently, there is no method that I know of to export emails from Thunderbird that include sent items. I have tried ImportExportTools NG, but even this only exports the inbox. And it is not guaranteed that the emails will sit under the new Inbox. It doesn't work I have tried before and could only use all those imported mails as reference. They did not go to the Inbox but into a subfolder under Inbox. It was disastrous. 6). I also tried restarting Thunderbird in safe mode and disabling all extensions. It still doesn't work.

My only other alternative is to keep Thunderbird as is and just use it for reference, install all those email accounts on Microsoft Outlook, and receive new mails there. I don't want to do that. I do not enjoy Outlook at all.

Please help! There must be a bug in the system since I can send but NOT RECEIVE and can receive only when security is switched to NONE.

Hi, I've got the same problem with my gmail account since the last update : can't both receive and send email. It works fine with my Free account (a French provider). I changed security.tls.version.min from 3 to 2 and then 1 but it still doesn't work. I deleted my account and tried to add it again. Thunderbird propose an automatic configuration which looks fine but it doesn't work at the last moment when I clicked on Finish.

Same problem here. Also with multiple emails and multiple ISPs. Also using ESET.

I had this problem with Thunderbird and ESET. I can now retrieve POP3 email. The failure was down to a problem with my ESET SSL certificate.

Disabling the ESET firewall does not disable SSL filtering. To disable SSL filtering explicitly in ESET v14: Setup/Internet Protection/Email Client Protection/EMAIL PROTOCOLS/POP3 SCANNER SETUP = off

With SSL filtering disabled my POP3 email works. Turning filtering 'off and on again' can fix the certificate permanently: https://support.eset.com/en/kb3126-disable-ssl-filtering-in-eset-windows-products On my system POP3 is now working with SSL filtering back on. Hope this works for you.

DISREGUARD: problem solved was indeed the POP3 Scanner Protocol in ESET Thank you guys!

Had some sort of windows update last night. This morning none of my POP3 emails are receiving or sending email. I tried turning off and on ESET email protocol but didn't help. Thunderbird doesn't seem to even be trying to receive emails on these accounts EXCEPT it is receiving and sending emails on my Outlook account.

any suggestions? please

I have the same issue on just my sons computer, not mine, we both use pop gmail and thunderbird. Please show me where there is a chosen solution to being able to send emails and not receive them which was the OP's issue. I do not have an issue with colored icons which is what the chosen solution is addressing.

mdavis1951 If none of the comments in this question work for you then please ask your own question. When you post a comment in someone elses question you are sending an email directly to them and anyone else who happens to be following the question. Your issue is not being picked up by the general community.

The OP's question had nothing to do with gmail. As you use Gmail and POP then it is highly likely that gmail have just decided to block you. If you do not use imap and OAuth Authentication then gmail will have blocked you. Logon to gmail webmail and reset the 'less secure apps ' option. Be aware that they will do it again periodically. https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/6010255?hl=en

Anyone should check the following if they use ESET/NOD32. If you are using ESET/NOD32 security/AV then probability is very high it is causing your problems. According to their forums, you should temporarily disable SSL until they solve the problem per https://support.eset.com/en/kb3126-disable-ssl-filtering-in-eset-windows-products?ref=esf - the problem is being reported by dozens of users https://forum.eset.com/topic/26517-problems-with-thunderbird-and-imaps/ https://forum.eset.com/discover/

There are various reasons why someone may not be able to download. Account Setting incorrect. Server not supporting up to date protocols. Firewall blocking Thunderbird. Anti-virus blocking emails. Server blocking thunderbird. Cookies not enabled.

The list goes on and it depends upon your individual set up. There is no one fix answer. Often the answer needs to be tailored. Some answers could be out dated as servers change Authentication Methods.

So please ask your own separate new questions - And Not in this question.
