I use Thunderbird to read my e-mails from btinternet.com. The program works fine at home and in other locations in my home country (UK). I tried the program (on the same laptop as before) in Greece and it asks me for the password. I enter it directly and a message come up saying access is denied.

There might be a filter based on IP's or location IP's set on your mail server. You should check with your mail server team if there is a such filter.
If you can't access the account through TB, you can probably still access it with webmail.
