Update to update. Do not have security permissions

more options

I was prompted to update by Firebox but the software update window replied with "Unable to Update .. you do not have the system permissions required to install it.

I **know** that I can download the latest version from the website, but it irks me that the software update feature is broken. From reading other threads on this topic, I'm assuming the security issue is that the Firefox app is installed in the **usual** Applications folder, which sits outside of my user folder. However, the other apps I use that do updates outside of the app store update interface do NOT have this problem. The Application folder allows Administrators to Read & Write and my normal user has administrative privileges.

Hi, shut down Firefox then go to it's Icon and Right Click run as Administrator.

Did the notice come from a pop-up or a website? If so;

. Whenever you get a message / popup that software / files need to be updated;

DO NOT USE ANY OF THE PROVIDED LINKS

While this may be a legitimate message, it could also be Malware or a Virus. Anytime you want or need to check for upgrades, go to the website of the True Owner of the program in question. For example, to check out Firefox, go to https://www.mozilla.org {web link}

You can report such a site at; Google Report Phishing Page {web link} which is the same when done while on site by going to Help > Report Web Forgery

Help us safeguard Mozilla’s trademarks by reporting misuse {web link}

For well over a year, an epidemic of Fake Update Notices have been popping up all over the place. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/forum-response-i-found-fake-firefox-update

I'm not sure why Fred is giving the reply he did, your Firefox is out of date. I'm not sure why the updater isn't working, but your best bet is to download the latest version of Firefox from www.getfirefox.com and install it. This should fix the updater in the future as well.

The OP is on Mac and not Windows as do check the whole post and More System Details before posting.

I'm on a Mac so PkShadows response wasn't helpful (thanks James for pointing that out).

Advice on avoiding phishing attempts is irrelevant to my question, so FredMcD's answers weren't helpful.

I will download and install the latest Firefox manually and wait until it prompts me for an update again. Perhaps a later version of Firefox won't give me the system permissions error. Thanks Tyler.

Sorry about that but have never used a MAC in my life and in my 60's. I try.

Yes, the updater thing did that to me also and took about 3 updates and installing full versions before it kicked in and worked itself. You may want to install from a full version installer instead of the Stub ;

Updates for various reasons may not successfully complete or be without issues sometimes whether on Windows, Mac or Linux. Not having Read and Write permissions for the user on Firefox folder can be one of several possible reasons.

The online Stub and the offline setups .exe is only on Windows.

Mac users get a DMG file which are containers for apps in Mac OS. You open them, drag the app to your Applications folder, and then eject them, saving you the hassle of the dreaded “Install Wizard” of most Windows apps.

The tarballs of Firefox for Linux is actually similar in concept to the .zip builds of Firefox for a Windows user as you just extract the archive and then run Firefox is the basics. Unfortunately the better .zip option was discontinued for Releases long ago ever since 1.0.2 due to problem crashers due to mixing .zip and installer builds.
