I now sign into Firefox with a security code. Should I be signing out before closing Firefox, and, if so, how would I sign out?

Hi SuZee

I'm still not sure what security code or password this is about. The Firefox version from the Mozilla server doesn't require to enter a password and using a version that does may come with all kinds of unwanted or otherwise unknown extras.

Is this a feature added by an extension you installed? Note that an extension can easily be bypassed by starting Firefox in Safe Mode by holding the Shift key.

So can you please confirm what kind of feature you use that requires to enter this password (Firefox master password for the software security device or otherwise)?

Is this about the password for the Firefox Sync account or something else?

If you didn't download Firefox from the official Mozilla server then do a clean reinstall.

Do a clean reinstall of the current Firefox release and delete the Firefox program folder before installing a fresh copy of the current Firefox release.

If possible uninstall your current Firefox version to cleanup the Windows Registry and settings in security software.

  • do NOT remove "personal data" when you uninstall the current Firefox version, because this will remove all profile folders and you lose personal data like bookmarks and passwords including data in profiles created by other Firefox versions

Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.

  • (32 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\"
  • (64 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\"

Your personal data like bookmarks is stored in the Firefox profile folder, so you won't lose personal data when you uninstall and reinstall or update Firefox, but make sure NOT to remove personal data when you uninstall Firefox as that will remove all Firefox profile folders and you lose your personal data.

Cor-el, Thanks for all the good info in your reply--it'll likely come in handy one of these days. Yet today, please understand that I WANT to use a password to log into my Firefox web site (doing so works very well with another program, my multi-purpose security program). My questions of today are:

  • Q-1) When I have logged into Firefox using a password and later want to exit Firefox, is it best to log out instead of simply closing the Firefox?
  • Q-2) If it's best to log out, how would I do that?

Thanks to you or anyone else who can answer this question. SuZee

I found the "Exit" Firefox button at the bottom of the settings box as well as an "exit" option at the bottom of the "File" list.

I'll just use these and stop worrying about how to sign out.

I have no idea what software security device is requiring that I log into Firefox with a password--I was trying to set up logging in with a password on either Internet Explorer or Google chrome and what I set up there popped up in Google.

I still like the logging in with a password and will not worry about what security device is requiring the password unless I experience problems, which my Trend Micro would likely detect for me.

So, for better or worse, call my case resolved.

Thanks, SuZee
