How do I set up a sub account using outgoing.yahoo.verizon.net for both my pimary and sub account email addresses?

I have been using Thunderbird for more than 8 years without problems under my Verizon Internet service. In the past week Verizon changed something that will not allow Thunderbird to work properly. They will not help me with this problem as they do not support third party clients. I can receive mail, but can no longer send mail under my email address. However, my sub account is still able to both send and receive mail. The sub account email address has been identified as the outgoing default. I have tried many combinations of the settings by switching identities and defaults but nothing seems to work. I would like to receive help in configuring both my primary and sub account email settings, so that Thunderbird will once again work under my Verizon/Yahoo internet account. I would be pleased if someone could assist me with this problem as I don't want to lose Thunderbird. Thanks.

Why not set her up as a distinct email account, rather than as an 2nd identity on your account?

You have shown us two distinct email account settings. Identities don't show as accounts.

These are the current settings utilized. Please let me know how to reconfigure them for Thunderbird to work properly. Account 2 uses one outgoing setting for both accounts and is set as the default. Both are entered with appropriate emails and passwords.

It's usual with many ISPs for one particular email account to be used for sending via SMTP. (This has always bothered me in that it involves sharing the main account's password with all and sundry.)

However, yahoo, along with gmail and hotmail (et al) usually associates a distinct SMTP outgoing "account" with each incoming account and would, in my experience, forbid sharing of the SMTP account with another incoming account.

Maybe verizon are responsible for mixing it all up.

If you can't make it work, you can get free email from any of the above, plus others such as AOL and gmx. You don't have to use what your ISP offers. And given that it's actually a yahoo service, I'd be looking elsewhere.

BTW, I don't understand what distinction is meant by "sub-account". At least, as far as Thunderbird is concerned, all email accounts are equal. You probably have an email address that you use to login to your ISP, and a bundle of account allowances for use by your family, but as far as an email client is concerned, these are seen as equals. The only complication I can think of is that you may need to use the "primary" account for sending, but it should allow other "from" addresses.

Ive been using Thunderbird for years. I like it and want to keep it. I'm just trying to find a workaround so that I can retain both mine and my wife's current email address with Verizon to minimize the hassle I am going through. Configuring email settings is not rocket science. In fact some friendly technicians at Verizon have helped me in the past when problems arose despite their corporate policy of not supporting third party clients. I know that there is a simple solution to this problem. I just need someone who is knowledgeable enough with Thunderbird, and and how it impacts with yahoo.verizon.net, to offer a fix.

The SMTP server settings for Verizon look good, however it isn't obvious whether there are two SMTP servers set-up in your Thunderbird profile or just one.

You mentioned primary and sub account email settings. As Zenos already mentioned, it isn't clear what that means.

Is it a single account with two identities (or aliases)? In other words, do the two identities share the same login credentials?

Or are these two independent accounts with different login credentials?

Thanks so much for responding to my email problem with Verizon Fios (ISP). The account Is a single account with two distinct identities. One for me and one for my wife, each with separate email addresses. When we access our email we are able to view each others account. I installed Thunderbird when I left Comcast six years ago and it has been working fine until last week. I had been using it for many years before that and am unaware of the exact settings required to restore it with Verizon, as I don't know exactly what changes have to be made.made. My wife and I still have the capability of sending and receiving email utilizing the Verizon/Yahoo server, but we prefer the convenience of using Thunderbird, as our emails come directly to our desktop. I'd like to find the appropriate settings that will make it work properly again. Currently both my and my wife's email addresses are listed in the incoming settings and only my wife's account is listed in the outgoing setting, which is designated as the default. This has worked well for us all these years, and it frustrates me that I am unable to fix it.

It might be instructive to add the accounts again to Thunderbird to see what settings it comes up with.

The business of you both being able to see each other's email does suggest that there is only one real email account and what we'd call an additional identity. In this case, there may be only one available "from" address, but that seems rather a stupid limitation.

Are there no Verizon user forums where other Thunderbird/Verizon users can tell you how they made it work?

Nothing here: http://www.verizon.com/support/residential/internet/fiosinternet/account+tools/account+management+tools/questionsone/85788.htm looks unusual. Seems just like the usual way ISPs do email. I'm puzzled as to why you access each other's mail. Do you have your own Inboxes, or does all mail arrive in a common Inbox?

How many distinct smtp set-ups do you have? Have you tried one each?

Scroll down the list to the last item "Outgoing Server (SMTP)" and select it. Review the list of smtp set-ups - is there one for eachof you? If not, use Add to create the missing one (for yourself, since there seems to be one for your wife). Label the two so you know which is which. The default label will be just the server name, so change this or at least add something to make it obvious by the name which does what.

Now go to your incoming account and under Account Settings for that account, select the appropriate SMTP set-up.

Just moments before I received your note I was informed that Thunderbird had crashed. Everything appeared to be quickly reset but when I did a test from each of our accounts to the other I received the following error message: Login to server outgoing.yahoo.verizon.net failed. Thunderbird does not seem to recognize either of our passwords.

The incoming server for each of us is configured as follows: incoming.yahoo.verizon.net Port 995.

Our User Names are identified by each ofour respective email addresses.

The outgoing server SMTP under Port 465 is configured as follows:

    Wife - outgoing.yahoo.verizon.net (Default)     It identifies my wife's user name under Description with her email address listed below.
    

Verizon Online - smtp.verizon.net My user name contains my email address. This input does not ring true to me.

Under Manage Identities - My wife's email address is listed under Description and her first and last name appears alongside of User Name.

I think that this input data is not correct as what I have been describing to you suddenly does not look right.

Unfortunately, I have not come across any Verizon user or Yahoo forums where other Thunderbird/Verizon users discuss how they have made it work.

In my haste to correct this problem I may have mistakenly inputted data that has further corrupted Thunderbird. Please let me know where I have gone astray and exactly what corrections need be made, as I am not well grounded in email speak. I also appear to be making little progress on my own. Thanks

I do not have to log-in to Thunderbird as emails stream down to it on my desktop automatically. The incoming server settings allow both my wife and I to receive emails independently, and directly in our joint in-boxes, under each of our identities (email addresses). Using the current outgoing server setting, email is able to be sent from one identity only (i.e, the one identified as the default). Only if the default is switched back to the other identity, can email be sent from that one. It appears that Thunderbird is no longer able to process a single outgoing server setting (within a shared account) that utilizes two independent identities as before. How can I escape from this dilemma and regain the capability to send email from each identity independently, without having to switch the default back and forth?

You have one Profile containg two mail accounts.

Please confirm: Tools > Account Settings > Outgoing server (SMTP) Confirm you can see two outgoing smtp servers listed.

Select the first one. I'm not sure which one belongs to your wife, but lets assume Account1 is her account. Description: eg: Wife Yahoo Verizon Server name: outgoing.yahoo.verizon.net Port: 465 User Name: wife email address Authentication Method: normal Password Connection Security : SSL/TLS

Use the 'Edit' button if necessary.

Then assign that Wife Yahoo Verizon to her mail account. In left side bar: Select the Account name for the wife mail account at the bottom on the right side locate 'Outgoing Server(SMTP) click on the drop down and only select 'Wife Yahoo Verizon' smtp server.

Then perform the same process to set up second smtp server. ools > Account Settings > Outgoing server (SMTP) Confirm you can see two outgoing smtp servers listed.

Select the second one. lets assume Account2 is your account. Description: eg: Husband Yahoo Verizon Server name: outgoing.yahoo.verizon.net Port: 465 User Name: husband (your) email address Authentication Method: normal Password Connection Security : SSL/TLS

then make sure your mail account is using only your smtp server.

Click on OK to save all settings.

then when you try to send an email from your email address. please report back on what happened.

What error message did you get...word for word?

The same problem still exists. With the most recent entries used, email can both be sent and received using my email identity (the default). However my wife's account can now only receive but not send email. The following is the error message received when attempting to send email using my wife's identity:

An error occurred while sending mail. The mail server responded: From address not verified - see http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/mail/original/manage/sendfrom-07.html. Please verify that your email address is correct in your Mail preferences and try again.

Any further help in resolving this problem would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

This sounds like your wife's mail account is not using the outgoing smtp server for her email address. Please provide two screenshot images. 1. Tools > Account Settings > Outgoing server (SMTP) select the smtp server which shows : Description: eg: Wife Yahoo Verizon Server name: outgoing.yahoo.verizon.net Port: 465 User Name: wife email address Authentication Method: normal Password Connection Security : SSL/TLS

2. Tools > Account Settings select the mail account name for your wife.

I tinkered with the settings a bit and found that in the "manage identities" input I had neglected to identify my wife's name as the default. When I did that, it seems to have resolved the problem. Thanks for your help.

Thanks again for your input. I'm always eager to learn more about the programs I have on my computer. Please note that Verizon does not offer any support for Thunderbird, and I am a novice in this area. I downloaded it years ago because I liked its features. This is the way it was initially set up when we first had Comcast as our ISP. I didn't want to use Explorer as we had to switch between identities if we had chosen to use it. Consequently, we chose to install Thunderbird instead and have continued to use it with Verizon as our ISP. We find it extremely easy to use. When we click on Thunderbird, our email status seamlessly appears on the desktop, within each of our joint in-boxes. We have no problems with this arrangement. When we are not at home and want to view or send email we can easily access the Verizon server where we can receive or send our email independently. What is the benefit of setting up a distinct email account versus a 2nd identity, and how exactly would that work?
