I normally run firefox with NoScript and AdBlock. Lately I have been unable to close tabs and after research saw that it was recommended to try safe mode. Safe mode has been working fine for me, but just now I cleared my cache and now I can't close tabs even in safe mode.

Edit: Shortly after posting this question, I tried to open a new tab and firefox froze up. I had to close it via the task manager.

Firefox itself closes properly. It does not continue to run after being closed. It is just the tabs.

Boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test whether, same things happening or not.

The problem does not always happen. It occurs every now and then. I work from my computer and I cannot spend all day in safe mode just to see if a glitch pops up.

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.
See Creating a profile:

If the new profile works then you can transfer files from a previously used profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over the problem

It could be the work of one of your add-ons, or even add / mal-ware. Look thru your add-ons list and make sure you know what each one is and what it does. Also, check the programs that are on your computer

Windows: Start > Control Panel > Uninstall Programs. Mac: Open the "Applications" folder Linux:

  • Ubuntu Unity {web link}
  • Xfce: Applications Menu category sections
  • options depends on the package manager and the desktop environment

Go thru the list. If you find something that you don't know what it is, use a web search.
