Dear Sir/Madam,

I am facing the following issue / bag on thunderbird. Suddenly, I cannot receive emails. Instead, a thunderbird notification message appears at the top right corner which says: "mail server ... is not an imap4 mail server". I searched this problem at the Internet and it seems that it is a bug of thunderbird; however, I could not find a solution.

Thank you in advance,

Vasilis

I located this info: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Not_an_IMAP4_server

The first thing I would try is to check your anti-virus/firewall software. The firewall must allow thunderbird. Sometimes the anti-virus/firewall product gets updated or Thunderbird gets updated and the anti-virus/firewall does not recognise Thunderbird and it basically blocks access. Close thunderbird. Open anti-virus/firewall product. set thunderbird to be allowed. On one occassion, I had to set to block thunderbird and then reset to allow. Restart thunderbird.

I would also suggest you exclude any Thunderbird folders from being scanned on startup.

Dear Sir/Madam,

I use Ubuntu 14.04 and thus no firewall exists. The problem occurred today. Yesterday everything was ok. Moreover, I also use a laptop with Ubuntu 12.04 and there is no problem with thunderbird.

Ubuntu - I see your point - but it does have this: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UncomplicatedFirewall

Ubuntu 'do i need a firewall' info: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DoINeedAFirewall

What about an Anti-virus product? What do you use? It could also be causing the problem. Suggest you stop it from scanning any Thunderbird folder on start up and also stop it from scanning incoming and out going mail.
