I need to block or delete and abusive contact - how do I do this?

You can automatically delete messages from a sender based upon their email address by using Thunderbird's Message Filters feature. This article describes what they are and how to use them:
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/organize-your-messages-using-filters
Your email provider probably has similar filtering and blocking features, accessible on their webmail page. The advantage of doing it there is that the problem will be taken care of even before Thunderbird can download it.
when will mozilla fix the lack of features in thunderbird to block a user? I'm being stalked and the filter feature doesn't work. IT DOESN"T WORK!!!! What kind of software team didn't think this would HAVE to be a key feature in email?
ONLY MEN????? C'mon Cambridge 7 bros! FIX THIS!
Thunderbird MUST first download a message before its filters can act upon it. The filter feature DOES work, and well. If it's not working, you have it set up incorrectly. If you show us a screen shot of your filter, maybe we can help you improve it.
As I already said, your email provider probably has its own filter or block feature than might be able to deal with it before Thunderbird ever sees it. Have you looked at that?
Unless you give us more information to work with, we can't offer you specific help.
What does "MEN" have to do with it? Is that intended to be an insult?

I am not happy with your answer! Users should not have to go through this silly rigmarole to delete an abusive contact. The same way we can easily delete messages we should be able to delete contacts. Illona Hope
Thunderbird has very effective tools for dealing with exactly the situation you describe. If you choose to not use them, that's your prerogative.
If you would like to see new features added or have suggestions on how to improve the program, you can make them here:
Thunderbird is not the best choice for everyone. It has many useful features to help manage email and is very customizable, but some people find the options to be difficult to understand, or overwhelming, or just doesn't fit well with they way they think. If you are in that category, perhaps Thunderbird is not for you.
This response is a cope out!
This forum is to help people use Thunderbird as it exists. We did not design it, we did not code it. We are here to help people use Thunderbird as it exists. And Lin fulfilled that role properly. Your being angry or insulting does not improve the communication. If you prefer an email client that blocks users in one click, then you need to select another email client, as Lin indicated.
