Recommended stories toggle on new tab customization won't stay off

I'm trying to remove the "recommended stories" section of the new tab page. Using the pencil button, I can toggle off the "recommended stories" button. But it doesn't stay off! After toggling off, if I open a new tab or even relaunch Firefox, the toggle is back on.

Found the answer in https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1601504 -- toggle stories on and back off again in the main settings page works to fix.
