Thunderbird hanging every few minutes

thunderbird has been hanging every few minutes since 38.4.0 was installed. It hangs permanently not for a few minutes. Deleting the *.msf files and/or global_messages does not fix the problem This seems to happen most but not always when thunderbird is idle so I thinking it may be a background task hanging up.

Two questions: 1) Is there a fix? 2) Is there a way to log the actions thunderbird is attempting so I can narrow down what action is hanging?

Windows 7 64bit. 150 gig of 350 available. 4 meg memory with plenty to spare.
