If you have restored a JSON backup successfully then you shouldn't delete the current places.sqlite file as that would reset (remove) the bookmarks once again.
You can remove any backup copies that you have made by renaming places.sqlite (e.g. places.sqlite.old) as those copies are no longer needed.

Problems with bookmarks and history not working properly can be caused by a corrupted places.sqlite database file.

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database file in the Firefox profile folder.

cor-el, thank you for the prompt reply. When I erase the sqlite file(s)... and reboot, will that restore all my old bookmarks that are completely gone? Or will that only provide me with the opportunity to generate new bookmarks on an uncorrupted file?

That depends on whether the most recent JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups folder is still having your lost bookmarks.

If they do not come back automatically then you can try to restore the bookmarks from an older JSON backup.

Before I requested your help (thank you), I added .old to places.sqlite at the direction of a forum, and that did not return my bookmarks. I just went into my profiles folder and see that I now have places.sqlite. old and places.sqlite -- should I delete both of these as the next step?

I also just noticed that I have under my bookmarkbackups numerous json files dated prior to this problem.

Sorry for all the questions, I am not terribly literate in the computer realm, and want to make sure that I'm doing the right thing. I am presently in Brazil, and do not have access to any of my computer resources at home in the US. Thank you.

cor-el, I restored my bookmarks from the drop down menu from the previous week. Thank you.

Last question, should I go into the sqlite files; and delete them now?

Thank you so much for your help.
