How can I make tabs open to the right of tab line

the-edmeister replied
John_Doe

Years of using FF 3.5 or lower made me get used to have a new tab opened at the end of the tabs line. since the 3.6 version a new tab is being opened to the right of the current tab which naturally causes me out of hobbit to keep closing the wrong tabs. In the settings I couldn't fins an option to restore the situation to the way it was. Any thought (except for - GET USED TO IT.... or similar answers)?

Set the pref browser.tabs.insertRelatedAfterCurrent to false on the about:config page.

To open the about:config page, type about:config in the location (address) bar and press the "Enter" key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website.
If you see a warning then you can confirm that you want to access that page.

You can change a preference to make tabs open

  1. at the end of all open tabs
  2. immediately after the current tab.
  • Type about:config in the URL bar and press the Enter key.
  • If you see the warning, accept it (promise to be careful).
  • Filter = browser.tabs.insertRelatedAfterCurrent
  • Look at the "Value" column (false=open at end, true=open after current tab); Value = true is the default.
  • Double-click that preference to toggle the value from true to false, or false to true
  • Restart Firefox (File > Restart Firefox)

Well, I'm sorry to have marked this one as "solved". I followed the instructions and managed to change the value from "true" to false" and restarted FF, but a new tab is still being opened one tab to the right of the current instead of at the end.

If you have an Extension that affects tab behavior (i.e., Tab Mix Plus, Tabberwocky, Tab Utilities, etc.), that setting may be over-ridden by the tab Extension settings. If you have a tab related Extension, look at all of the settings for that Extension.

Otherwise, you may need to use Safe Mode to locate the problem:

I did have 'Tab Control' addon, thought it might give me the option to choose the way new tabs are opened. removing it solved the problem, THANK YOU !

You could continue using Tab Control if you like that Extension. Always familiarize yourself with any Extension's options/settings by

For Tab Control, you would need to go to Tools > Add-ons > Extensions, click on Tab Control, click Options, on the "Tab Control - Options" dialog, un-check "Position new tabs to right of current tab", click OK and the problem would have been solved.

Happy to have been of help to you.

Be sure to update the plugins mentioned in my post.

Wouldn't it be a useful option in tools->options->tabs to open new tabs at end? That way people can easily choose whatever their working preference is - mine is "at end" as it keep the tabs I'm going to get around to away from the ones I'm working on right now.

A check-box would be much simpler for the general user than hitting the "here there be dragons" area with all the potential pitfalls that lurk there.

That is a preference that usually is only changed once to suit the individual user's needs or wants. The developers are loath to add a clickable pref for something that isn't going to be used more than once per installation.

If you want to be able to change it with a clickable UI pref whenever you want to, look for an extension with that feature.
