Opt out of AI completely

Is there a way to completely opt out of having AI in my browser?

I find recent implementations of AI in Firefox quite frankly disgusting. I don't want to see it, I don't want to use it, I don't want it suggested to me. Not only it's unneeded, but also all your LLMs are a waste of electricity, fresh water and are a threat to my privacy, and we don't even mention all the legal trouble AI scraping creates.

I need a switch to completely remove any mention of LLMs/AIs in my Firefox browser unless I search for it on the internet (and, trust me, I wont; I'd prefer to continue thinking for myself and having real people with skills and talents do things if I can't do them myself) and have none of them touch me in any way. Kill that thing with fire.

Ideally Firefox, one that advertises itself as a secure browser with respect towards its users, shouldn't have any mention of AI in the first place, you know. But since companies are in a craze about it for some unknown reason (trust me, we don't want it; if I want to be lied to, I'd go to a paediatrician to talk about my symptoms, not a language model I can't trust with my data), at least give your users an option to get that awful thing out of their browser it they want to.

Have a nice day. <3

Hi Daniel,

There are currently a few use cases of AI in Firefox which, luckily, you can absolutely tweak (including disable if you don't want to use it):

  • AI chatbot. To disable this (in case you accidentally enable it), you can uncheck the AI chatbot box in the Firefox tools section.
  • Smart tab groups. You don't need to worry about this if you've never enable the feature.
  • Generating alt text on PDFs. You don't need to do anything about this since it's opt-in by default.

I completely agree that users should be in control of any AI implementation within the browser, and we hope that Firefox’s current approach live up to your expectations. Hope my answer helps!

To fully opt out of AI features on most platforms, follow these general steps:

1. **Check account settings** – Go to the privacy or security section of your account settings. 2. **Disable AI or personalization** – Turn off options like "AI features," "personalized ads," or "data for machine learning." 3. **Request data removal** – If available, submit a request to delete your data from AI training. 4. **Contact support** – If options are not clear, reach out to the platform's customer support for help with opting out. 5. **Review app permissions** – On your devices, restrict apps from collecting extra data.

Each platform handles AI differently, so exact steps may vary.

You are completely erasing trust in Firefox and Mozilla by using an opt out model for AI.

I just noticed "Ask ChatGPT (Z)" in my Firefox context window. I DID NOT CHOOSE TO INSTALL THIS. I am actually quite interested in LLM capabilities, but I an NOT interested in supporting Mozilla if you are going to force AI on us users. CUT IT OUT!

The instructions to disable the BShM chatbot are only for sidebar users.

I can't use the sidebar, I have to avoid sidebars due to migraines, so how do I disable the chatbot, remove it from context menus, etc.?

Hello

You can try. 1 - Go to configuration editor for Firefox https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/about-config-editor-firefox 2 - Enter a search term browser.ml.chat.enabled and set the value to false 3 - Enter a search term browser.ml.chat.menu and set the value to false
