I just spent too long attempting to send an email that would not send. The SEND button would not turn on. I knew there was a problem, but I didn't know what it was. The problem was: I had failed to enter a 'send to:' address.

I would like Thunderbird to include as a product feature; When you click on a darkened button, Thunderbird will tell you what must be done to make the button work.

Hmm, so the program knows why the button was disabled. an interesting concept. I am not sure the program does actually know however. In this instance the windows opens with the button disabled, it is the action of putting in an address that "enables" it.

Perhaps a more appropriate response would be to flag the missing fields in the circumstance you are mentioning. Rather than disable the button until an address is entered. In a similar manner that web forms just keep reloading with red dots beside mandatory fields.
