What do you mean backup files?
Restore Bookmark Backups
Firefox automatically makes backups of the bookmarks. These are stored in the bookmarkbackups folder.
Open the Bookmarks Manager; Press the Alt or F10 key to bring up the toolbar, and select Bookmarks. Hot key is <Control> (Mac=<Command>) <Shift> B.
Once the window is open, at the top of the page, press the button labeled Import and Backup. Select Restore. From the list, pick the file you want and click it.
The backups are stored in a jsonlz4 file named something like this; bookmarks-2016-06-29_1424_enD1GTH ya0JmicnYWg4V4g==.jsonlz4
In this example; 2016-06-29 = date created, 1424 = number of entries.
I followed directions "selected Import & Backup" Then selected 'Restore" Then selected file to restore on certain date. I get message "Unable to process file". Tried 3 different dates with same result. I lost my Bookmarks and Bookmarks toolbar as a result of a FF update. So still no solution.
You can mouse to the top of the browser and Right Click in a empty spot where you can Check Mark the Menu Bar if want it or can re-enable your Bookmarks Toolbar. This can also be done from Customize at the page bottom under Toolbars.
You should always :
- https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/export-firefox-bookmarks-to-backup-or-transfer AS HTML
- https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/back-and-restore-information-firefox-profiles
Your old Profile may still be there so please check and follow along with this to get your bookmarks if possible : https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/recovering-important-data-from-an-old-profile
Please let us know if this solved your issue or if need further assistance.
Hi AZNORSKI-100, there are various kinds of database corruption that can cause that problem restoring a backup. Could you try a workaround:
(1) Convert your bookmark backup file to an HTML-format file
(2) Import the HTML-format file
(3) Reorganize your bookmarks if needed after import
For #1:
You can open your current Firefox settings (AKA Firefox profile) folder using either
- "3-bar" menu button > "?" Help > Troubleshooting Information
- (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
- type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter
In the first table on the page, on the Profile Folder row, click the "Open Folder" button. This should launch a new window listing various files and folders in Windows Explorer.
Then scroll down to and double-click into the bookmarkbackups folder. Keep this window open while switching back over to Firefox.
Open my converter page here:
https://www.jeffersonscher.com/res/bookbackreader.html
Keeping that page visible, resize the Windows Explorer window so you can drag and drop a recent bookmark backup file onto the box on that page.
It takes several seconds to decompress. Then you should be able to use the Export HTML button to create a file and save it someone convenient such as your desktop.
For #2:
See this article: Import Bookmarks from an HTML file.
Can you import the file without error?
For #3:
You can use the Library window to move bookmarks from where they landed after the import to where you want them.
