Browser periodically is overlaid by a blurred bluish screen.

Posted

I finally got tired of Chrome tracking me all over the place, so I returned to Firefox. I'm using a PC with Windows 7.

However, since I started using Firefox again, periodically a blurred bluish screen overlays my browser. I can tell the browser's still in the background, and sometimes part of the page will flash clear and then vanish just as quickly. Waiting doesn't resolve the problem. Nothing consistently causes this, although I am usually in Facebook, but I have to close the browser, losing my tabs, and reopen the browser. Since I never know when it's going to happen or what triggers it, I can't figure out what's going on. I've seen other queries in the community support forum, but they aren't exactly what's happening to me. Flash is up-to-date, the browser's up-to-date, malware screen finds nothing.

I'm out of ideas, but I really, really, really don't want to go back to Chrome, so if any of you has any idea what's going on here and how to resolve it, I'd love to have your input. Thanks!

Chosen solution

Fred, I used the Control Panel uninstaller and successfully removed two of the things listed - interestingly, it opened the very same Uninstaller that you directed me to in the first place. However, when I went to uninstall the last item (26.0), I get the same message that the uninstaller can't remove it because Chrome's running!

I've posted in the Adobe forums about this, so perhaps I'll get some help along those lines, but do you think I'm OK for now since there's only one version?

I will do a screenshot and post here if the problem continues - it shouldn't be more than a few hours, because it does this a few times each day. Stay tuned!

Fred, I started to follow the Uninstaller instructions, but the dialogue says it can't continue until a conflicting program is closed. Everything is closed. The dialogue says the conflicting program is Chrome, which is closed. I used it once today, but it is definitely closed. So that's one issue and I can't proceed further using the uninstaller.

However, if I go to Control Panel, I can uninstall at least the two conflicting versions from there. I don't know if that will also remove the two appdata files that the Uninstaller would remove (%appdata%\Adobe\Flash Player & %appdata%\Macromedia\Flash Player). Would that work just as well?

I did check for updates; there were two. They had nothing to do with drivers, but I ran them anyway. When it happens again, I will certainly try making a screenshot and upload it here.

Thank you!

Fred, I've done a restart and I've done a cold boot - the Uninstaller still thinks Chrome is running. I really don't get this. I don't want to uninstall Chrome for a number of reasons, but I don't know why the Uninstaller thinks it's running. It doesn't offer an option to just close the application itself - the only choice given is to quit the uninstaller.

So what do you think of my uninstalling the two versions from the Control Panel instead?

I haven't heard back from anyone at the Adobe forum (it isn't very active, I don't think), but removing the two Shockwave Flash programs that I was able to do from the control panel does seem to have resolved the problem. I did have one sudden browser crash today, but that's nothing to what had been happening, and it wasn't accompanied by the fuzzy screen. So I think you've solved it, Fred, and I'm am very appreciative!

Will do, although today's crash said it was unable to provide any information, which does sometimes happen. Either way, I will post those here in case they are germane to the issue. Thanks again for your help!

I spoke too soon, Fred. I got the blue blur screen once yesterday and just now again. On the plus side, it's been appearing far less frequently since I removed the conflicting programs, but I guess it's not gone entirely. I'm attaching a screenshot as you requested. I'm not sure why the lower part of the screenshot shows as gray, since the entire screen is the blue that shows toward the top.

What you posted above is information about your computer that is attached to the crash report and that doesn't include the crash data like the ID.

If you have submitted crash reports then please post the IDs of one or more recent crash reports that start with "bp-".

  • bp-xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx

You can find the report ID of recent crash reports "on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page".

  • click the "All Crash Reports" button on this page to open the about:crashes page and see all crash reports.

Alternatively you can open about:crashes via the location/address bar.
