For some reason during the latest update, my Firefox crashed and now won't even re-install when I went through the website. When I try to open it, it says, "Your Firefox profile cannot be loaded. It may be missing or inaccessible." I went into "Programs and Features" on the computer and it's there, so I am not sure what is really going on.

First uninstall you current version. Download a new standalone version of mozilla firefox (i.e. offline installer) and install it.

If it doesn't uninstall, download this software, Revo uninstaller to remove firefox:

It should solve the problem.

If the problem still persists. Try this: [Note: It's too risky to do this if you're an average computer user. Call your friend who is an expert in solving such things.]

Uninstall firefox again and delete the firefox related directories from your system drive C:/ (or whatever in your case). Related directories can be found in C:/Users/"Username"/App data/Local/Mozilla and C:/Users/"Username"/App data/roaming/Mozilla and C:/Program files/mozilla/firefox

In all the mentioned locations, delete the "Mozilla folders". Then try to install the latest copy of firefox. If this one doesn't work, wait for a better reply.

A likely cause is a problem with the profiles.ini file and the profile marked as Default=1 in this file is no longer present on the hard drive.

  • Windows: %AppData%\Mozilla\Firefox\
    C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\
  • Linux: ~/.mozilla/firefox/
  • Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/Firefox/

You can use one of these to make Firefox create/use a new default profile:

  • Delete the profiles.ini file to force Firefox to create a new default profile
  • Use the Profile Manager to create a new profile
  • Use "Choose Folder" to recover an existing profile if there is still one present
