My bookmarks have started disappearing one by one. Perhaps there's a limit as to how many bookmarks we can save? I'm going to need to start saving bookmarks/favorites using another browser I guess. Not all my bookmarks are gone but it looks like the most recent ones, so that's why I'm guessing it's just that I have too many bookmarks? They're showing up when I click on "show all bookmarks" but not when I click on "bookmarks."

This is very frustrating. Had to "register" in order to post a question. My username was taken, password wasn't the correct number of characters, etc. That was after being forced to look at several other questions similar to mine.

I guess I'll just post this question but, honestly, it took up too much of my time to post it. I updated my Firefox browser as was suggested to another questioner and I clicked on Import/Backup then clicked on Restore and now I lost even more bookmarks --permanently.

Oh well, I guess this isn't such a tragedy. I'll just forgo bookmarking impt web sites and maybe write them down or favorite them under another browser and just limit the number of sites I bookmark. Don't have much more time to put into this.

Sorry to hear about the registration difficulties, and that you didn't find the suggestions helpful. The question flow is subject to constant revision, so your input is useful.

Now, on to the question: Firefox should never lose bookmarks, and I'm not aware of any practical limit.

When you are trying to access the missing bookmarks, are you using the Bookmarks menu from the menu bar or drop-down toolbar button, or the Bookmarks Sidebar (Ctrl+b opens and closes it), or the Bookmarks Toolbar?

When you find the missing bookmarks in the Library dialog (the dialog that opens when you Show All Bookmarks) are they on the Bookmarks Menu (or a folder on the menu), Bookmarks Toolbar (or a folder on the toolbar), or in the Unsorted Bookmarks folder?

The Bookmarks Menu doesn't work well if the list gets very long because it doesn't have an obvious way to scroll (you will see very tiny triangles at the top and bottom that you have to hover your mouse over). If the problem is a very long Bookmarks Menu, and moving bookmarks into folders isn't convenient for your style of working, there are some tricks allowing you to add a scroll bar. Please ask about that if you're interested.

By the way, about this part: "I clicked on Import/Backup then clicked on Restore and now I lost even more bookmarks":

Usually you can choose from a range of dates to restore, based on how often you completely exit and restart Firefox. You shouldn't lose more than one session's worth of bookmarks, but depending on how often you start a new session, that could be several days. You may be able to use your history to review the sites you visited during that time and go back to bookmark the ones you want to remember for the future.

Just a comment on bookmarks capacity.

Like Jeff I do not think there is a practical capacity limit, and I understand that what Firefox does when running low on space is to remove some of the History items not the bookmarked items.

There is a very useful addon places maintenance

  1. If you run that it attempts to repair the database. It may help.
  2. It also has an option to produce a short report.
Please use that option. Then cut and paste the results in to your next reply. That should enable Jeff to confirm (or otherwise) that you have not run out of space for bookmarks.
