Firefox upgrade to version 23 - several problems
Hello.
This is my first post in this forum, although I am a long time user of Firefox. I'll take the chance and thank to Mozilla for all the effort you put into making the best browser available and keep the web open.
Everything was working fine until I allowed Firefox to update to version 23 today.
I am having multiple problems, perhaps more than in any other upgrade process to this date, which is why I am taking some of my time to write this post and hopefully provide some feedback to make Firefox become better in future releases.
1- In previous version, I had all plugins blocked with the setting "plugins.click_to_play" set to true. Right now, I am aware that it is possible to set this option individually for each plugin, in firefox>extras>plugins, the problem is now I have to turn them all to "always ask", even though click_to_play is still true and in "about:permissions", I still have "always ask" enabled. This doesn't make any sense and it goes against the feature Firefox introduced not so long ago, the click to play plugins in every page.
2- Youtube videos stopped working, they don't load at all and sometimes youtube report "an error ocurred". I've tried with plugins enabled and click to play but nothing works. However DailyMotion and Vimeo videos are loading fine so far.
3- Facebook Messenger for Firefox stopped working too. I have removed and added it again numerous times, login and logout from facebook, following the steps of this troubleshoot https://support.mozilla.org/pt-PT/kb/how-does-facebook-messenger-firefox-work but nothing seems to make it work, the chat remains empty with no one there and the buttons for updates and friend requests don't even show up.
I'm also a bit annoyed with the change in the search, I usually kept two different search engines, one in awesome bar and other in the search bar, it was very useful. Now when we change the engine in one bar, its the same in the other, then why keep the search bar at all? Why not integrate it all in the awesome bar? This change doesn't make any sense as well. Let's say I have Google in awesome bar and want to search DDG, I have to change it first and only then search, but then I have to revert again, it is a quite unfortunate decision. If it is to make it easy to change the default search engine, this should be found in settings.
Besides, I don't think that entirely removing features from the browser is the best way to keep user share for that matter, having different search engines could remain an option for those who want to, the same can be said about disabling tabs, even though some of them may never be used by most people, it doesn't mean they are not used at all. Configurability is what always made Firefox special, the ability for it to become *your* browser.
Even though I am frustrated with these problems, please take this feedback as a constructive one. I will be always supporting Firefox every way I can!

I was able to figure out the problem with Youtube Videos
"An error occured. Please, try again later" comes up on every Youtube video since I upgraded to Firefox 23 in both of my personal profiles, although many others such as DailyMotion or Vimeo worked fine.
After starting in safe mode, Youtube videos starting playing and I figured out the problem was caused by HTTPS Everywhere extension (by EFF) https://www.eff.org/https-everywhere
So in Firefox 23, apparently Youtube can't play videos in a secure HTTPS connection.
For anyone with the same problem, since it only happens on Youtube and no other (as far as I know), it is unnecessary to disable this add-on, simply go to its options in Firefox > Add-ons, search for Youtube, right-click the entry and select alternate to disable the secure connection on Youtube.
As for Facebook Messenger, its seems broken for a lot of people, as you can see in the following posts

It is not something about my configuration of Firefox, because it is broken on a newly created profile as well and other people are suffering of the same, so I can just sit and wait for a fix to be patched, in the meanwhile I am disabling it.
Click to play plugins is a work in progress on Firefox, so hopefully it gets addressed in the next version. Setting it to true in about:config should require activation for them all but that is not the case, since they are all still active in Firefox > Addons > Plugins. So the workaround is to require activation individually for each plugin.

You have 3 issues listed, in my opinion, you should open 3 questions, one for each of the issues so we can track it easier and keep everything at once place. I definitely have problem #3 listed here with Facebook Messenger for Firefox.
I'm having problems loading some sites mostly Feedly and Pandora Radio and can only get them to load after restarting FF. This only happened after updating to FF 23. It seems to me that this latest version of FF was a rush job.
My "click to play" is completely gone too, my about:permissions are to always ask, and in about:config, too
I also lost DuckDuckGo as default address bar search(I don't use search bar), but click to play is what I miss most because I can't stand having to time when to open a link because there's autoplay flash stuff in there
Hi Buzaga, I don't understand how click to play works now, so hopefully someone else can address that.
Regarding DuckDuckGo, did you add their search plugin? If you add that and activate it, then it will be the default for the address bar as well. You might have to temporarily display the search bar to do this easily. You can do that using the Customize feature (e.g., right-click a blank area of the tab bar > Customize > drag search bar back to the Navigation Toolbar).
Hi cnavigator, the address bar search change is in response to problems with the keyword service constantly being hijacked by add-ons and third party software. Someone has created an extension that restores the feature of having a different search engine for address bar search if you'd like to try it:
I'm having trouble with Feedly and Pandora loading since FF was automatically updated FF 23. Clearing the cache and cookies for those sites don't work, I have to constantly restart FF to get them to load. Also I can't sign into Moz. Persona since I either get a error message saying that cookies are disabled, which they AREN'T, or a black pop up window. Clearing the cache and cookies for Persona does not help nor does restarting FF. This is very disappointing since I've been a FF user for years now. It seems to me that they rushed to get this new update out.

First, though, can you check for extension updates here:
orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons > "gear" button > "Check for Updates"
Unfortunately I have the same problem. Messenger for Firefox does not work. For me it seems that the problem is on facebook's side. I hope they will fix it as soon as possible. We just have to wait and see ....
