Why does automatic update break?

more options

Could someone provide more details on the possible bugs or issues that might cause automatic updates to break?

There is no technical information about this on this site, just a few vague reasons such as someone didn't close firefox correctly on another user account or another app is interfering.

A way to troubleshoot, or reset the automatic update system would be wonderful as well.

Experienced this issue with several versions of firefox including esr. Seems to work more reliably on PC's vs. macs.

Can you post the details of one particular case where automatic updates failed? It sounds like you've read Update Firefox to the latest release and How to fix the Update Failed error message when updating Firefox.

If the suggestions in those articles haven't worked, you can try the procedures in Basic troubleshooting - especially steps 6, 7 and 8.

I've completed all the steps on Basic Troubleshooting page except step 7, re-installing Firefox. When I go to About Firefox it says "updates are available at.." instead of just updating. I see this on different machines with different OS's, but this one in particular is an iMac with OS X 10.7.3, FF 10.0.2 ESR.

I would prefer to find a fix besides re-installation. Re-installation is not something one of my users can do on their own and requires me to do manually. Is there a way to see how FF determines if it can or can't receive automatic updates and then falls back to displaying the "updates are available at.." message?

This is a case that I suspect may be due to an issue in the installation directory and I think re-installation would fix it. If you don't mind, I'm going to send you a private message with some instructions for collecting data before you re-install. This might help us pinpoint the cause.
