After tbird updated yesterday, it restarted in dark mode, which I hate. How can I get it back to light mode? I cannot find this option in the settings

Menu icon > Addons and Themes It opens in a new tab Select 'Themes' It will list a few themes and one is called 'Light' - click on 'Enable'

There is no light theme. That was the first thing I checked. also, it seems if I want to actually use one of the themes I like, the email changes back to dark mode. It isn't a theme....it is light or dark MODE

Thunderbird by default has a Dark and a Light theme. Please post an image showing what you see in 'Menu Icon' > 'Addons & Themes' > 'Themes'

re: the email changes back to dark mode.

Are you saying it is only the 'email' using in dark mode? Are you talking about an email you received and want to read OR are you talking about an email you want to create in the 'Write' window?

What settings have you got selected here:

  • Menu icon > Settings > General
  • Under 'Language & Appearance' - click on 'Colours'

You should be using the following;

  • Text : Black
  • Background: White
  • Do Not select 'Use System Colours'
  • 'Override the colours specified......' Select 'Never'.

Those are my settings.

Are you saying it is only the 'email' using in dark mode and everything else is light? Are you talking about an email you received and want to read OR are you talking about an email you want to create in the 'Write' window? OR are you talking about everything in Thunderbird ?

Please post some images to explain where the problem occurs.

What Operating System are you using Windows 10, MAC. Linux ?

As soon as I pick a theme of MY choosing, everything goes dark except for the actual email to read, but every other item turns dark! Win 11

Please provide the information I asked you post because currently you are insisting Thunderbird has no Light theme which should not be the case and I need to see an image of the 'Addons & Themes' > Themes.

Do not try to test using any theme you downloaded because Thunderbird is not responsible for those themes created by authors.

I've added an image below which shows you what you should be seeing. On the left is dark mode. It shows Light mode as disabled. I select the 'enable' the Light mode and the Light mode instantly appears as shown on the left of image.

I need to see what you see in that same location.

I see your picture and I am again telling you that I don't have a light or a dark theme listed! So any screenshot I send you would look just like what you sent, but no light or dark theme options. Those are the facts.

They may be the facts to you but if I have to present the fault as a bug to a bunch of people who are not looking at your computer screen then I need proof.

But in the meantime, this maybe one of rare occasions when an update went wrong. If you downloaded any addon themes please remove them first. I believe something went wrong with the installation because you should not have a completely empty Themes.

Uninstall Thunderbird program, but do not do anything with the profile folders. Go to https://www.thunderbird.net/ Click on 'download' and then install.

Please report back on results.

I did that and now see a light and dark theme. I have enabled the light theme. But what happens when I go to try a new, interesting theme I like? I will see. In the meantime, this was helpful.

FYI...switching to any other theme, as another person said, reverts t bird to dark theme.  ???? No answers to this yet.

It seems something did go wrong with the update, so it good to hear a fresh install got the default Themes properly available again and the 'Light' one works ok

I presume you are not talking about the default themes. You have installed a theme which you downloaded. What Theme did you download ? Post a link to it and I'll test it.

However, you have to understand, if you are using any downloaded extension or theme and you only get an issue when using that extension or theme then you have to contact whomever is the author and tell them about the problem so they can fix it.

This is still happening in Thunderbird 102.5.1 which I just updated to in the hopes that this bug was fixed albeit it happens randomly now. I have tried all the above suggestions and advice. Nothing works permanently. I never know when it will go into dark mode which I hate. It will load up in the morning and work fine. I return in the afternoon and it is in dark mode. I restart it and nothing changes. Are there any modifications that can be done in about:config? It is a bit maddening.

Thunderbird 102.5.1 changes almost all my favorite themes to dark mode. I hate dark mode. The light theme is boring. It gets more difficult to find beautiful themes... options are limited now.

Everyone seems to be having an issue when it comes to using a theme which was not created by Thunderbird.

Please check the following: Settings > General Scroll to bottom What's the setting for hardware acceleration?

If it's enabled, disable it and restart TB, and see if there's a difference.
