I have read the replies to similar queries with outgoing servers on Thunderbird but still seem to be doing something wrong.

I have 4 email accounts in Thunderbird - the first two are related to my website servers and the next two are a mail.com account and a gmail account and when I choose any of these accounts and look at the outgoing server it is always the same? I guess this is something to do with a default setting but I just can't seem to change it. The problem is when my website goes down or the firewall flips I lose all of my email and I want to keep the two independent email accounts separate.

This is set at the tools>accountsettings>account pane at bottom.

Hi David, I know that but what I think I require is clear help on how to assign individual servers for each account.

I thought that was what I posted. On that screen, you have ability to select the desired server for the account.

I know - but it is not holding my choices. Default seems to be giving me the same outgoing server on all 4 accounts? I am assuming the chosen server should be seen in bold type and held?

Ok, you should have four smtp servers. Do they have unique identities? It may help if you post a screenshot of the pane at tools>accountsettings>Outgoing servers - and also a screenshot of the mail and gmail account pages that show the selected smtp server. Thank you.

Yes there are three servers listed. The Mail.com, Gmail.com and my web hosts server which is fine for my first two email accounts. When I go to the server page my web host server is in BOLD and marked as default but it is also set as default in the Mail.com and Gmail.com? Does 'default' set a server to all accounts I wonder and how do I get the appropriate server to hold for the Mail.com and Gmail.com accounts. I note there are Add, Edit, Remove and Set default options on the server page. I seem to have tried all options but it still goes back to the web hosts server for all four accounts.

Hope that makes sense.

I have concerns also for your other accounts that share one server. Thunderbird may have problems when it is using one server for two accounts. I encourage creating a separate smtp server with appropriate email id for the other of those two.

Thanks but those two are just info@ and myname@ with my website name and have working fine for years. My problem is as outlined earlier when discovering that the outgoing server is the same for Mail@ and Gmail@ which are fairly recent additions.

It would be so much easier to understand if the Outgoing server was listed under the Incoming server on the Server Settings page.

Basically my question is: If you have three different accounts on Thunderbird how do you assign different Outgoing servers to each and if you action Default does it put the same server with all the accounts?

Those two of yours may be part of the problem. My guess is the mail and gmail are recent.

Yes as I said they are the most recent but this does not really address my individual Thunderbird outgoing server question - and incidentally all accounts work with my iOS systems. Can you suggest a fix please?

Why are you resistant to adding the additional SMTP server? It cleans up your setup and I still believe may be part of the problem.

Apologies, a misunderstanding. I did not catch on you were suggesting adding another server. I'll try and set it up.

Hi again. I have added the extra server as you suggested so info@ and rick@ both have the same name server applied to them - this is the same as my incoming server supplied by my web hosts. However when I click on 'Server Settings' for each of the 4 accounts the same server is applied to all of them in bold with default applied? I am obviously doing something very wrong and maybe there is some idiot-proof guidance somewhere for setting up multiple outgoing servers on Thunderbird? Your help and patience is appreciated.

I assume the two servers each show a different email account, one for info and one for rick? Is the description different for each one?

more options

Yes to both of your queries - and I have attached a screenshot to hopefully help.

OK. Your posts indicated that 'Default' appeared in bold for all of them, but I see it only for one. What happens when you are on an account page and select a desired smtp server for an account? Please post a screenshot of any two of the account pages. I attached a sample of the page I'm interested in seeing.

Hi, thanks and I think I may have just seen part of the problem as I have not noticed the Outgoing server selection at the bottom of the accounts page before? Are the two screen shots what you wanted?

That was my instruction on my FIRST response to you. And you said "I know that.."

Again apologies, that was another misunderstanding on my part.

To be honest I am struggling with trying to dis-entagle myself from years of Microsoft Office, Outlook etc. and also trying alternatives for Word processing and Spreadsheets.

Many thanks again for your support. I'll see if I can sort it out.
