I upgraded from W8.1 to W10 and now need to recover my Thunderbird files. I copied the system image prior to doing W10 install. As it was a clean install of Windows, the C drive was wiped clean. I can download Thunderbird and reinstall it, but how can I get my mail files back?

Isisombululo esikhethiwe

Hi Matt et al,

I used Macrium Reflect to create the image (but I guess you knew that from the .mrimg) so I found out how to use the same program to gain access to the Thunderbird folder. I got this done. But, as it turns out, there is an issue with permissions that wouldn't allow me to copy this folder. A Google searched turned up a solution provided by the MR development engineer. This work around may be in the instructions you provided as well.

Bottom line is I was able to copy the folder and my new install of Thunderbird pull it in and I'm back right where I left off.

Thanks.

If you have access to the system image, look for c:\users\<yourID>\appdata\roaming\thunderbird folder. Copy that folder. Then, install Thunderbird on new PC, but do not start it. Next, locate the c:\users\<yourID>\appdata\roaming folder and paste the copied Thunderbird folder there. It will overlay the Thunderbird folder created when you installed Thunderbird and that is what is intended. Now start Thunderbird and you should be ready to go.

Thanks David. The image file is a *.mrimg file type. I have not at all worked with disk image files. Is this file readily viewable or editable (assuming that's a word)?

My assumption is that if you have an image backup, you have software that created it that can extract components from it. Otherwise, I don't see where it would be a benefit.

Ah. Good point. Again, I have not worked with images before. I felt one way to look at contained file would be to image a disk and recreate the system. But, yes, I have the software that the image was created with and I'm sure it will allow me to pull stuff from it. David, this is one of 'duh' moments I, we all. have from time to time. Keeps me humble! Thanks.
