My computer slows to a point where it fails to respond to inputs. Usually, I'll have a yellow band appear, saying something like, "A web page is slowing down your computer. What would you like to do?"

Well, I guess when I wrote the above I was expecting whatever help you might be able to give. Obviously, I'd like the problem fixed; how its done is up to someone who understands the problem and knows a whole lot more about these things than I do, and can communicate the procedure to me.

Sometimes this problem is caused by website that is very busy. If a lot of people may be posting comments via browser or twitterfeed, you may get that yellow band. Clearing the cache may help, but the site may refresh frequently and your cache will again fill up rapidly.

You can Fix this problem by cleaning the cookies and site data. Steps:-

  • Click on menu icon.
  • click on options.
  • You will find Privacy & Security Menu.
  • In this menu, you will find cookies and site data.
  • just click on clear data.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Themes
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window

You can try the Firefox version from the official Mozilla server if you currently use a version from the repositories of your Linux distribution.

Clearing Cache and Cookies

When you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.

(1) Clear Firefox's Cache

If you have a large hard drive, this might take a few minutes.

(2) Remove the problem site's cookies (save any pending work first).

While viewing a page on the site, click the lock icon at the left end of the address bar. After a moment, a "Clear Cookies and Site Data" button should appear at the bottom. Go ahead and click that.

In the dialog that opens, you will see one or more matches to the current site address so you can remove the site's cookies individually without affecting other sites.

Then try reloading the page. Does that help?

Testing in Firefox's Safe Mode

In its Safe Mode, Firefox temporarily deactivates extensions, hardware acceleration, any userChrome.css/userContent.css files, and some other advanced features to help you assess whether these are causing the problem. Here's how you get there:

If Firefox is not running: Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox. (On Mac, hold down the option/alt key instead of the Shift key.)

If Firefox is already running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" Help button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • (menu bar) Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

and OK the restart.

Both scenarios: A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh).

My window for clearing caches didn't display as your message showed. I tried to remove ones that I'm unfamiliar with but ...well, it's taken me several minutes just to get back here and resume typing so I guess that's not it. But I thank you for leading me into what I hope is the right direction. I'll keep trying.

Thank you! Y'know, I've been posting photos on a website that draws many old friends, from the 1960s and '70s, and with all the spare time nowadays, there's a lot of activity. This problem did occur previously , but not to this degree. I notice that, if I just get up and walk away--do a little weeding in the yard. etc. and come back, the problem seems to have lessened. Hopefully, I'll be able to divvy up my time to make this less of a problem. Thanx again for your well considered answer .(You might check out Provincetown in the '60s..and P-town in the '70s to see what I've been up to..besides weeding).
