I can receive Mac mail but I can't reply to messages. SMTP settings look correct - how can I fix this?

I have migrated a few accounts to Thunderbird and google accounts and even outlook accounts work fine. Mac mail though is not cooperating. I have gone through the list of things to try - I have changed the password for the icloud mail - created a new application-specific password - SMTP settings seem right.

Setting up iCloud accounts in TB can be complex:

but I don't think OAuth authentication for iCloud is currently supported in TB (use normal password authentication and enter an app password).

Thanks so much for your help - your advice plus that of the thread in the link you provided worked! My Icloud account uses 2-factor authentication so I set up an app specific password for TB. I noticed that you need to make sure this is created by checking that it appears in the 'history' section of the settings for app-specific passwords.

What worked for me was to follow your advice to use normal password authentication but instead of using the i-cloud standard one, I used the app-specific one. Also I changed the setting of the connection security to STARTTLS, as recommended by someone on the thread you referred to in your post.

Port setting left at 587

I had spent hours trying to figure this out so I am really pleased to have this sorted!!

Thanks again Gaby

I have tried all of those things. I can send but not receive, but only on my PC. All other devices work. I get a “parce” error. All was working for years until last month. Apple tried to help me with no success.

Is the 'parce' (parse?) error issued by TB or another program? If it worked before, I suspect there's a 3rd-party security/AV program that has become incompatible with TB. Do you have such a program acting on the TB mail folders? Running the computer in Windows safe mode can sometimes eliminate startup programs as a source of error.

I can send mail on my icloud account, but incoming mail to my PC, gives this error: '''The mail server for this account responded with a Parse Error.''' I have not changed anything. My business account is also on Thunderbird with no issues. It is POP mail. My antivirus is Webroot Secure Anywhere.

Do you by any chance have custom headers defined for filters, or any filters at all acting on incoming messages?

I don’t know what that means, so I doubt it. Any other suggestions?
