Why is Firefox breaking compatibility with most add-ons?

more options

I'm very sad to see Firefox go on the same road as Chrome. Add-on's were the main reason I stayed with FF and never managed to stick with Chrome no matter how many times I installed and tried to get used to it. Great add-ons like SearchWP, Table2Clipboard ... kept me from transitioning to Chrome. Now that it's broken I have no more reasons to use FF. Is it faster? Yes. Is it easier to use? Not for me, it's lacking the very nice add-ons that made it unique. Only 30% of all add-ons I used work in the new Quantum realm. Do I wan't a fast browser? To some extent yes, but not at the expense of loosing Firefox to an entirely new Chrome like browser, that looks like MS Edge.

We understand that you are having some trouble with the add-ons you have in your profile. We expect you might be seeing disabled Legacy add-ons, or see that some of your add-ons were disabled after you updated to Firefox 57. We are happy to help.

In Firefox 57, The WebExtensions API enables add-ons to be more secure and perform better with your browser. Unfortunately not all of them were updated to this new standard. To check if yours were, see arewewebextensionsyet.com. We also created a feature to help you find a replacement for your favorite add-on. Read more here.

To find replacements for your legacy add-on:

  1. Go to ‘about:addons,’ click ‘Legacy Extensions,’ and
  2. Click the button for ‘Find a Replacement’.

If a replacement doesn’t exist or isn’t helpful, please use this utility to find recommended alternatives. If you don’t find a suitable replacement, please head over to the add-ons forum for help. We expect legacy add-ons to continue migrating even after Firefox 57.

There’s also a community-sourced list of alternatives on Google Docs.

Due to other changes in Firefox, we can’t delay the switch to WebExtensions APIs. We’re here to help you find alternatives to your favorite extensions. To start, use this utility to find recommended alternatives. If not, please head over to our forum to ask for help.

What add-ons are compatible in Firefox 57? You can search addons.mozilla.org for compatible extensions here: https://mzl.la/2wFQ19a
