Hello everyone, I don't think I need a screenshot of this because honestly its pretty straightforward.

I'm not exactly sure when this problem started, but I THINK (could just be a coincidence) that it started happening after I started working on a Web Extension that I was developing. However, it was a temporary extension and I have not loaded it up since.

Anyways, basically any type of menu (context menu, Downloads box, menu items) won't disappear when I click away from them. So for example, if I click on the Downloads button the list of my downloaded items shows up but won't disappear until I click on one of the downloads themselves or I press Esc on the keyboard. If I try clicking anywhere else, the menu still stays open and I can even open other menus, I just can't close them.

I would like to avoid a re-install if possible because honestly I'd like to find out the issue and see if I can resolve it, maybe I can learn something new. Thanks in advance.

You can try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.

  • Options/Preferences -> Advanced -> General -> Browsing: "Use hardware acceleration when available"

You need to close and restart Firefox after toggling this setting.

You can check if there is an update for your graphics display driver and check for hardware acceleration related issues.

I tried that, but that didn't work. Thank you though.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link} by holding down the <Shift> (Mac=Options) key, and then starting Firefox.

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). Is the problem still there?

Thank you for the response, I've tried starting it in safe mode as you suggested, but the problem still remains.

I've always kept my Firefox installation up to date though.

Does your system have a touchscreen -- not a touch pad in place of a mouse, but the actual display?

Firefox 52 turned on touchscreen auto-detection on the Windows version of Firefox, and that causes strange issues on some sites, although I haven't heard of it causing sticky menus on the UI.

Here's where you find that setting if you want to experiment with it:

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button promising to be careful.

(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste touch and pause while the list is filtered

(3) Double-click the dom.w3c_touch_events.enabled preference and edit the value to 0 (zero) and then click OK. The options are:

  • 0 => disable touch
  • 1 => enable touch
  • 2 => auto-detect whether the system supports touch (default in Fx52)

I don't know whether that will take effect immediately or after you exit and start Firefox up again. Does that have any effect on how menus behave?

No, I do not. For a second there I thought you were on to something because I do have an external touchpad, but I haven't connected that in a few weeks. Its just a desktop, nothing fancy.
