This problem started today. When attempting connection to SMTP with primary ID, I receive a message asking for an SMTP password for an ID that was deleted three years ago. I can find no trace of that old ID except in this error message. TBird will not connect to SMTP.

Right click the account in the folder pane and select settings. Look at the very bottom of account settings where it says outgoing server (SMTP). I would bet you deleted the incoming account but not the outgoing one.

Matt, Thanks but the problem is that I deleted one of my email IDs in account settings three years ago. Now, when I try to send anything TBird somehow recalls that obsolete email id and tries to log on with it instead of with my primary ID. The logon then fails. I am trying to find out where some remnant of that ID might be, so that I can remove it and go back to getting my mail of my primary computer.

I just told you where that remnant could be and almost certainly is located. DID YOU LOOK?

Matt, YES I LOOKED. When I say deleted I mean deleted. The obsolete ID is obsolete. Each of my IDs has its own SMTP outgoing server selection option. Each has its separate "Manage Identities" window. No such window exists for the deleted ID. It was deleted in July, 2014, and has not been seen since - until today. And then, only in the message that asks for its password.

Thanks anyway.

Is your account with Hotmail/Live/Outlook? They change outgoing mail to the Primary account for the user name. So their alias feature does not work when used from a mail client, only when mail is sent from their web site.
