what is the new purple mask in the browser corner?
why does the mask icon always show up in the browser window, and all new tabs are automatically private?

You get a purple PB mask at the right end of the Menu Bar (Linux: at the left end of the Tab bar) and "(private browsing)" appended to the Firefox title bar unless you are in permanent Private Browsing mode (Always use Private Browsing mode; Never Remember History).
You can use an extension to get Private Browsing mode support per tab.
- Private Browsing mode tabs get a dashed underline
You can toggle Private Browsing mode on/off via the right-click context menu of a tab

thanks, i actually just figured it out!
I had opened a new private window unintentionally. then whenever i opened a new tab, it opened as private. because the interface changed today, i couldn't tell what was going on. that was the issue. when i opened a new window, it was normal.
thank you again for your help!
