after an update am not able to view any emails

an update installed and gave me the option to restart now or restart later, i re-started after reading my emails and when Thunderbird opened it won't show any emails, just the home page, 

But i am getting notifications on my desktop of new emails i just can't read them,

also any add-on that i've added has gone

after trying a few things i found i could access my emails if i open them in a new window, which was ok but a tad frustrating so i closed thunderbird and reopened it showed three windows as an experiment i closed each window individually and again restarted thunderbird

oh and surprise and relief, its now sorted itself and seems to be working ok for now
