Why do my emails and sent mails disappear after a short time?

My messages disappear after a very short time. Can I set Mozilla to automatically retain them until I delete (this is the norm with other mail services)? if negative can I set the retention time to be longer? How can I retrieve valuable messages that have disappeared in this manner before I had time to attend to them?
