Web Assistant 2.0.0.441. Firefox allowed it to be installed without my permission! Googled it but didn't get a clear answer.

Hi I finally got an answer from Incredimail and they said it was part of their email program!

Where does Web Assistant appear -- is it a toolbar?

You can remove most unwanted add-ons here:

orange Firefox button or classic Tools menu > Add-ons > Extensions

(Note: the More link often identifies the publisher or providers other information to track down where it came from.)

In some cases, there is only a Disable option and not a Remove option. If you get that, try looking for the add-on in the Windows XP Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs.

Any luck?

Hi, Thanks for the info. Yup I did go to Control Panel and removed it. There was no "more" information except 2 initials. That's why I made sure it was disabled before I removed it. Hmmm wonder why it got by Firefox?

Usually when you find an add-on in the control panel, it tagged along with some other software you installed. If you check your Downloads list (Ctrl+j) perhaps you will identify a likely suspect?

Thanks. No luck on the downloads. The only thing I've downloaded lately is FF 12.

Did you installed or updated incredimail 2.0? on my system that extension showed on both firefox and internet explorer after the update. It seems to run a java script that connects to perion.com, I detected it because noscript blocked it.

Yes I did update Incredimail about a month ago! Hmmm looks like Incredimail is trying to sneak in advertisements or tracking software. Think I'll follow up this issue with them.

Thanks so much for the information.

Yes, it's come from IncrediMail 2.0. I've done the Update yesterday and uncheck all other stuff like Toolbar, Startside or searchoption. But the setup will get some internetconnection to facebook and other websides. The Firewall ask for but I didn't allow it. However, after the Update FF12 an GC19 ask for use the Web Assistent AddOn. I disallow it and don't activate the AddOn's. IE9 are not infected, there was only the old Webassist 1.xxx activ.

I've emailed IM and let them know I was very unhappy with their sneaky file downloading. IM does have to be watched carefully for unwelcome downloads. It really makes me mad when IM tries to take over my start page.

Thanks everyone for all the information. The Firefox community is the best.

I searched for a while to try and remove Incredibar search engine, which is malware. this FAQ didn't actually help, sent me on a wild chase with SuperSpyWare etc. tried about:config to remove, there isn't a remove only a modify (firefox please note). It took a while of looking through about:config to realise that there is a whole line of search engines. all pointing to Webassist. So control panel, add/remove apps - removed Webassist now all is well.
