Firefox does nothing when I first open it.
All that I usually see is, in the location bar, is "about:*"!! this problem has gone too long now.

It seems that "about:*" is set as your home page, for some reason. Try How to set the home page.
Also, it appears that you are running a very outdated version of Firefox. Mozilla will not continue to give you security updates, and many websites are considering dropping support for Firefox 2.0. Consider updating to Firefox 6, or, if you prefer the older version, Firefox 3.6
