links in emails don't open

When I have Firefox 4 as my default browser (Windows Vista Home Premium) and I click on a link in an email in Thunderbird (3.1.10) there is no response. When I open the Thunderbird error console I get the following message:

Error: uncaught exception: [Exception... "Component returned failure code: 0x80004005 (NS_ERROR_FAILURE) [nsIExternalProtocolService.loadUrl]" nsresult: "0x80004005 (NS_ERROR_FAILURE)" location: "JS frame :: chrome://communicator/content/contentAreaClick.js :: openLinkExternally :: line 188" data: no]

If I change the default browser to a different browser (e.g. Google Chrome) and click on the same link in the same email, the page opens in Chrome and there is no error message in Thunderbird.
