Thunderbird will not let me delete email messages
Thunderbird will not let me move messages to the trash folder. If I do move a message to the trash bin the message will re-appear in the in-box. I have tried to follow the steps in the Mozilla support website but that did not work. When I try to delete a message I get the following:
The current operation on "inbox" did not succeed. The mail server for account rex@rexperry.com responded: [TRYCREATE] Mailbox doesn't exist: INBOX/ Trash (0.001+0.000 secs).
I am using an HP desktop machine running W11. This problem did not happen until I switched to the W11 machine.
Any suggestions? Thanks, Rex Perry rex@rexperry.com

Have you tried deleting the message instead of moving them. Try using the delete buttons or the keyboard delete button.
Matt, Thank you for the response. I am not sure why I was trying to delete the way that I was except to say that I probably wanted to keep a copy "just in case " I think that I will change my way of doing things and follow your example. Thanks again, Rex
Matt, My earlier response was in error. I accidentally opened outlook when I should have opened Thunderbird. If I try your method in Thunderbird (deleting messages with the delete key on the keyboard) the message keeps coming back. I get the message that I identified in my first note. I can use Outlook but I really prefer Thunderbird and would like for it to work the way that it should If you or any others have other ideas on how to fix this I would like to hear from you, Rex
[TRYCREATE] Mailbox doesn't exist: INBOX/ Trash (0.001+0.000 secs).
Based on that error, right click the account in the folder pane and select subscribe.
Does the list of folders include a trash? The error indicates it does not exist so this step will confirm that.
If it does not exist; Is there a deleted or other similarly named folder listed that would indicate it might be setup for the purpose of holding deleted mail?
If there is;
- Open account settings
- Navigate to server Settings for that account.
- change the folder selected for moving deleted mail to to the one you located in the subscribe box. Trash is probably incorrect for your account.
I believe that the problem is solved. Here is what I did: In Thunderbird (TB) click on email name (upper LH corner), from pull down menu select "settings". In account settings select server settings. In server settings select "advanced". In the IMAP server directory type "INBOX" all caps. In my case this solved the problem with messages that would not delete. It did, however, create another problem which was that folders disappeared from the LH window in TB.
After trying every suggestion I could find to get my folders back I went back to the IMAP server directory (see above) and removed what I had previously typed ( the space is now blank).
When I checked TB again the folders had re-appeared and the email messages were deleting as they should. I hope that the system continues to work correctly. Thanks for your help,
