I am getting an "access denied" when I try to use online banking. The bank said it may be an extension issue. They suggest I use another search engine such as Edge or Chrome. Both offer too much "bloatware" for me.
I really would like to find a way to continue using Firefox.

Could you list which bank it is? Certain bank sites tend to give Firefox a error message more than others.
Yes, it could be a extension issue. If you have a addon or extension installed that blocks ads or blocks tracking, it could cause a error on the bank site. Try disabling all your addons then go back to the bank site to see if the error is gone.
