Browser Completely Unresponsive
Recently Firefox started "crashing." It would be running just fine, and then websites would just stop loading. If I clicked a link or searched for something, it would be stuck loading until I restarted Firefox. I tried restarting my computer as well, but that didn't work either, as the issue just came back within a few hours.
Sooo I went to google to search for answers. I got to a forum (https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/881250) that seemed promising, and edited my network.http.max-connections value from 900 to 48, as the chosen answer suggested. I figured if it didn't work, I could always just change it back.
How wrong I was.
Not only did it not work, it prevented me from doing anything. Now when I open Firefox, nothing loads. I can see the toolbar, search bar, and my bookmarks, but the actual screen is blank. No widgets with my frequently visited sites and some news stories, no homepage, just blankness. When I enter a url or do a random search or even try to open about:config, nothing happens. It doesn't even show a loading icon.
I attempted to refresh Firefox, but it got stuck in the loading stage, which I attributed to my already breaking it somehow. So I uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox. But no dice. It's still entirely unresponsive.
Any help would be appreciated. Please keep in mind I'm largely computer illiterate!
Update, found a forum on microsoft (https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/vcruntime140dll-was-not-found/f43d5afd-9239-4913-8f32-20e44a959e13) that said it might be a corrupted Visual C++ Library. So I followed that.
Still no dice. No changes whatsoever.
If you have submitted crash reports, please post the IDs of one or more recent crash reports that start with "bp-".
You can find the report ID of recent crash reports on the "Help -> More Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page.
- click the "All Crash Reports" button on this page to open the about:crashes page and see all crash reports.
Alternatively you can open about:crashes via the location/address bar.
I can't open about:crashes or Help. It's totally unresponsive.
Press Windows Key+R on the keyboard. A Run dialog will open. In the Run dialog, type %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Crash Reports\ and press Enter.
Okay I have a crash report from Aug-12, but the text of it just says "1660344045". I was expecting something more.
You probably didn't look at a crash report with a "bp-xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx" file name like I wrote above, but looked at an InstallTimexxxxxxxxxxxxxx file that gets created when Firefox updates.
There aren't any "bp-xxxx. . ." files, only the "InstallTime. . ." ones.
I'm not sure where you are -- Firefox doesn't work at all, or the problem is with web content, you can use internal Firefox pages?
If Firefox stops working on Google/YouTube, this can be a problem with the "zero round trip resumption" feature. That's intended to speed up connection times on sites you are actively using, but some users lose their Google connection in mid-session, including "Oops" messages on Gmail. Here's how you can turn it off and test whether that helps:
(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button accepting the risk.

(2) In the search box in the page, type or paste security.tls.enable_0rtt_data and pause while the list is filtered
(3) Double-click the preference to switch the value from true to false
After that, try Google again in a new tab. Any improvement?
Also, please undo the change from the 2011 thread. The web (and Firefox) have changed so much since then.
You can check for issues caused by a corrupted or incomplete Visual C++ installation that is missing runtime components (Redistributable Packages) required by Firefox, especially VCRUNTIME140_1.dll.

You may also have to install the Visual Studio 2013 Redistributable Package. You need to reboot the computer.
One other thought: can you use the external profile manager? Here's how:
Call up the Windows "Run" dialog either from the start menu or by holding down the Windows key and tapping the R key. This also works in the Windows 10 search box if Run doesn't work.
Execute this (which assumes Firefox is installed in the folder for 64-bit programs):
"C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -P
Windows should show a dialog listing your existing Firefox profiles and offering the option to create a new one. As a test, let's create a new one.
(1) Click the "Create Profile" button. In the next panel, click Next.
(2) In the next panel, type a name like Test2022 and then click the Finish button.
(3) Back in the Profile Manager list, make sure Test2022 is selected and click Start.
Can Firefox start up in the clean profile? It won't have your data but it gives us access to more tools and lets us know that something in the old profile is causing the problem.
@jscher2000 I can't try either of those things because firefox is completely unresponsive. None of the bookmarks or toolbar tools work, the search bar doesn't work, almost nothing works. I can make new tabs, but that's about it.
@cor-el I tried that after one of the forums I visited suggested it. No change. I'm going to try it again though, just to see. If it's any different I'll post another response.

Boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support to see if that has effect.
