I followed this guide to set config settings for sorting the Threads Pane:

https://superuser.com/questions/13518/change-the-default-sorting-order-in-thunderbird

This is the updated list of values:

Preference Name Status Type Value mailnews.default_news_sort_order: default integer 2 mailnews.default_news_sort_type: default integer 18 mailnews.default_sort_order: default integer 2 mailnews.default_sort_type: default integer 18

But, this does not work. I think that Super User post is outdated. How can I make this work? Thanks.

I'm using Thunderbird 68.8.0 (32-bit).

My preferences are exactly as you describe. This means my default sort order is descending and sort type is Date, so all newest emails by date are at the top.

Obviously this does not apply to threaded emails, only the first email that started the thread would be in date order. All subsequent replies/conversations within a thread would be shown as newest as last received in that thread as they are an appended conversation to an earlier email.

What is the current problem?

What are you trying to achieve ?

If you want the default to also be 'threaded' : In config editor type: view_flags

Look for these lines:

  • mailnews.default_news_view_flags
  • mailnews.default_view_flags
  • Double click on each line to access edit window.
  • Enter the value 1 and click on OK.

The Value 0 means unthreaded.

Hi Toad-Hall. I'm just trying to sort the Threads Pane by Date in an descending order. I think it is actually working now as I probably had to restart TB. You are right about the unusual sorting order of individual replies within a thread.

Edit: I spoke too soon. Actually these config settings are not sticking for new folder selections.

Nice! Is there a config setting to display threads expanded by default? I set View > Threads > Expand All Threads but it doesn't seem to stick when reselecting a target folder.

This is not working still.
