For years I was able to copy profiles folder and profile.ini in windows and paste into firefox profile directory. Now with this new Quantum version of firefox I can't do a simple thing like make the name in the profile ini the same as the default profile folder open firefox and all my bookmarks password etc are there. I am running Linux as I hate windows and think its a POS. I set all the rights in windows to admin and show hidden files folders and the damn Quantum keeps overwriting the profile directory I pasted into firefox.

Can somebody tell me why such a simple thing has cost me 8 hours of mental freakin masturbation of this happy horse shit ? I mean these freakin software developers expect all the techs to run to them and ask why...... how about if it works don't fix it ?? If you practice that epiphany you would not have techs running around wasting their time on this BS. I am going with Opera as I am fed up with Firefox.

How about Support Volunteers do not need that sort of information to provide Help fixing issues. You have a beef, take it up here : To submit suggestions for new or changed features, may I suggest: Feedback: https://qsurvey.mozilla.com/s3/FirefoxInput/

Since was Patched Netscape code you were using before and this took over 5yrs to make to conform to the W3C.org who is in charge of Standards and Practices and development for Web Browsers and Web Page Code. But you would not know that. https://www.howtogeek.com/332449/whats-new-in-firefox-quantum/ https://www.howtogeek.com/333230/why-firefox-had-to-kill-your-favorite-extension/ https://www.howtogeek.com/334716/how-to-customize-firefoxs-user-interface-with-userchrome.css/

Well I guess there is a reason for that and best learn how and why's of something new. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profiles-where-firefox-stores-user-data https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/export-firefox-bookmarks-to-backup-or-transfer https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/import-bookmarks-html-file https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/back-and-restore-information-firefox-profiles https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profile-manager-create-and-remove-firefox-profiles http://kb.mozillazine.org/Transferring_data_to_a_new_profile_-_Firefox http://kb.mozillazine.org/Standard_diagnostic_-_Firefox#Profile_issues

What I am talking about has absolutely nothing to do with standards and practices and has absolutely nothing to do with extensions. It has to do with the profile that I choose to be default getting overwritten and I cant use my old settings such as bookmarks and passwords etc. This has to do with poor beta testing before releasing to the public. And btw the link you posted about typing that command off the run line only sees the profile set up by firefox and does not see the default folder I copied and pasted into the profile directory and there is no profile.ini to instruct software of target default directory. I have wasted a day on this and lost 2 customers because of this glitch. I hope this provides input for someone who can read what the real technical issues are instead of industry standard politics.

Is your problem with Firefox on Windows or with Firefox on Linux?

Can you give more detail what exactly you are doing (file paths)?

The problem happens in windows 7 in the profiles directory of firefox. The user account is administrator and the profile that I copy and paste keeps getting overwritten by firefox whenever I run firefox. It should have also a profile.ini which it does not have even when overwritten. Folder options set to show all files and folders and when you type in the command on the run line that %appdata blah blah it only sees the default folder overwritten by firefox and does not see the profile folder I copy and past into the directory where firefox overwrites what I copy and pasted. Please don't take it personally but it is very frustrating when I spend 7 hours to try and accomplish a very simple thing.

A copied profile is only recognized when it is registered properly in profiles.ini. Easiest to do this is to use the Profile Manager to create a new profile

See "Profile was moved or renamed":

Note that you should never use "Choose Folder" to specify a folder that already contains files that do not belong to Firefox (i.e. only use "Choose Folder" to recover an orphaned profile that isn't listed in the Profile Manager)

The profile .ini was not to be found in the windows 7 machine I was working on. Subsequently I do not need a GUI to change a profile folder and I manually edit the profile.ini in notepad to the same name as the default folder that I choose to use within the firefox profile folder. I do not have multiple profiles. Just the one I have had for years which btw is not recognized by Firefox and or the command in the run line % appdata blah blah. I have been doing this for years and now it cant be done. I have lost 2 irate customers due to this and there is no technical explanation as to why every time I run Firefox it overwrites the default profile folder that I copied. I appreciate your help but it does not solve the problem. Now I am at financial loss over this glitch and no one has a technical explanation as to why because whoever wrote the code does not want to admit their mistakes. Can someone man up here and tell me WTF is going on ? Hey thanks.

There should be a profiles.ini if Firefox is able to start. When profiles.ini is missing the you get the migration wizard to import data from other browsers. I assume you know that Windows hides the .ini file extension, so you probably see a profiles folder and a profiles file.

You can find the profiles.ini file in this hidden location:

  • Windows: %AppData%\Mozilla\Firefox\
    C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\
  • Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/Firefox/
  • Linux: ~/.mozilla/firefox/

The actual profile folder is in this location:

  • C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\

You can check the other location used for temporary data (e.g. disk cache) as well.

  • C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\

I have already explained this previous to this post that the folders are all set to show hidden files. This is the last time I will repeat myself. Thank you for trying to help but this does not solve my problem.
