I have installed FF57 Portable alongside 56, However I am unable to use it until I can sort out problems with tabs. I can fit around 50 tabs on 56 but only about 20 on 57. So I need to remove the names from the tabs, and also stop them scrolling off the page. I would also much prefer the tabs to be under the bookmarks toolbar. I have searched add-ons and the web, but so far found no solution. Please help.

Firefox 57 has a pref to set the minimum tab width.

  • browser.tabs.tabMinWidth

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I accept the risk!" to continue.

Thanks Corel - much better but does not completely solve the problem. I set tab width to 10, which increases number of visible tabs on my 14" machine to 28. Further reducing tab width has no effect. So I need to further reduce size and get rid of the tab names.

The down arrow at the right of the tab row is useful, providing full names and 47 tabs, but is an extra click compared to the tab bar. Hopefully Mozilla or an add-on will fix this and my other problems (tabs scrolling off screen and tabs below bookmarks toolbar) before too long!

Many of us also need a Scrapbook type add-on (in case you have any ideas on this)

You can pin a tab via the right-click context menu to make it as small as possible and only leave the icon (and tooltip).

I thought I might add my "two pennyworths" to this. I wonder if you might possibly think about using tabs slightly differently?

I love tabs and use quite a lot, but I was rather incredulous reading an article on tweaking Firefox posted on ZD net where the author says:

One of Firefox's advantages is that there's a minimum tab size. I typically have around 100-150 tabs - sadly, my record is over 600 - and I want them to be big enough to read.

It makes my tab use pale into insignificance! He goes on to say how easy it is to select the right tab:

It's really easy to move between tabs in Firefox. For example, you can click the down-arrow in the top right and pick a tab from the drop-down list. You can type a couple of letters into the search box (tw finds the Twitter tab). You can use the mouse-wheel to scroll through them extremely quickly. There's no need to make them illegibly small just to fit them on one screen.

You can read the full article here (if you can suffer the mass of advertising that comes up on the page):

Just a thought... Richard.

I think this will help part of your problem - it looks as if you might have done this before. It looks a bit daunting with a lot of tabs but doesn't take long.

Right click on the Bookmarks toolbar item and click on Properties(last item) the Name which will be obvious can be abbreviated down to nothing.

Remember, to save space that you can also create Folders on your Toolbar to group similar bookmarks(right click on the toolbar; also offers new separators). Also don't be afraid of the easily accessed spillover - >> at the end of the Bookmarks Toolbar. You can keep names there.

Thanks again Corel/Richard. Pinning is useful as fixes the tabs on the page, but tab width still too large and causes open tabs to scroll of the page. In 56, I have 28 pinned tabs, which would use almost the whole page width in 57. But I think that pinning plus the right-hand down arrow will make 57 manageable. Will have to wait for Mozilla or an add-on to fully fix (including tabs below bookmarks and scrapbook!),

Many thanks also Alan - I am ok with the bookmarks - as you say, you can delete their names. It is the tabs I am mainly concerned with.

How are you shrinking the tab width and removing the text of page titles from the tabs in Firefox 56 -- with an extension? You may need to use custom style rules to emulate that behavior in Firefox 57.

jscher: I use TabMixPlus in 56 to set tab width to 10-250 pixels, and TabsOnBottom to put the tab bar under the bookmarks toolbar - both Legacy add-ons. I would hope there are rules in FF57, but so far have not been able to locate them.

Hi jonrichco, when I refer to custom style rules, I mean rules that are not to be found anywhere in Firefox's configuration pages. These are the kind of "hacks" that we have extensions apply for us at the click of a box, but now they need to be pasted into a userChrome.css file (an optional file Firefox will load at startup).

For an example of how custom style rules can move the tabs below the main toolbar and bookmarks toolbar, see:

https://www.userchrome.org/what-is-userchrome-css.html#movetabbar

There is a website where many suffering "withdrawal" from Tab Mix Plus are getting advice on replacements. You might ask about the tab width there if you don't find a solution here soon.

Thanks jscher. I had hoped to avoid userchrome, but may have to tackle it. However, I might leave it for a week or two and see if some of the legacy add-ons get written across. I will be happy to pay to help TMP and Scrapbook make the change if feasible.

Mozilla has nothing to do with Developers Extensions/addons. Mozilla approves them for use with Firefox and provides a web site to distribute the Developers program from. Developers have a link off that page to their support page/FAQ's and have contact info as well.

So sites have notes up saying still working on code change. Can try contacting them and bribing them. Doubt the ones that have not updated their program in 6yrs will be interested. Someone may fill the breach . Put your Extension name into this to find a alternative if there is one : https://mozilla.github.io/extension-finder/

Please let us know if this solved your issue or if need further assistance.
